Two Killed in Vintage WWII Warbird Crash

FREDERICKSBURG, Texas -- A privately-owned vintage World War II Mustang fighter airplane that had participated in a flyover for a museum event crashed into the parking lot of a Texas apartment complex Saturday, killing the pilot and a passenger, authorities said. One of the victims was a veteran,

"We are extremely saddened by the unfortunate accident this afternoon that claimed the lives of two wonderful people. We express our deepest condolences to the families of both on board," Cartier said

The P-51D Mustang fighter was returning after performing a flyover during a living history show at the National Museum of the Pacific War, museum director Rorie Cartier told The Associated Press in an email. Fredericksburg is home to the museum.

The plane was obviously not going to fit in that parking spot.

It says “Compact Only”, that’s what it means.

He died doing what he loved, no doubt.
Just wish they didn't take that beautiful bird with them.

I almost feel worse for the loss of the plane.

Wonder what went wrong. I hope it wasn't a simple case of running out of fuel.

This is weird considering the P-51 thread last week. I hate it for those involved.

Probably one of the few perks of living in San Antonio is the museum is only an hour or so away.

The National Museum of the Pacific War is actually 3 blocks of dedicated WWII: Pacific memorials and museums. They have the Pacific Museum, Chester Nimitz Museum, a Memorial Garden and a mock-up beach landing war zone area.

Nimitz's house is right across the street from the Museum, pretty cool.

The Museum itself is badass, but it's a bit wordy. You can spend a solid day in there just reading.

He and the plane were at the WWII air show last year. Hard to believe this happened. Guy could fly.

A debate in the warbird community is whether to fly them and risk a loss.
