Twitter is building a new feature that will allow users to tweet things longer than the traditional 140-character limit, and the company is targeting a launch date toward the end of Q1, according to multiple sources familiar with the company’s plans. Twitter is currently considering a 10,000 character limit, according to these sources. That’s the same character limit the company uses for its Direct Messages product, so it isn’t a complete surprise.

I don't use twitter for much other than traffic and news updates. If this happens I will probably stop using it since it will be just like facebook.

The draw to Twitter is the quick messages without all the fluff. I think this would be a mistake.

That's a horrifically bad idea. Twitter has a great business model in keeping things short and sweet with the 140 limit and this would ruin that. I could see a modest increase but it cannot and should not go beyond 200. 10K is just batshit insane.

Twitter will die if this happens.

The 180 character count is 180 too many for some athletes. 10,000 and shite gets real, real fast.

140 to 10,000? That escalated quickly.

There will be more characters, nonetheless.

140 is fine. The soul of wit is brevity. The 140 character restriction hasn't stopped lots of idiots from making fools of themselves. 10,000 characters is an essay. I don't need essays from Bieber and Kanye.

140 is fine.

I always wondered why they picked 140 to begin with, imagined it had something to do with server consumption

I'd be happy if it would just automatically change stuff like ur to your (or you're), 2 to too (or to, or two), and spell out truncated words such as smthn (this means smithing),
Or brb (barbie, obviously.)

Nope. Text messages on cell networks are limited to 160 characters because, for lack of a better explanation, way back some guy did some informal tests and found that 160 characters was about the average length needed to get a sentence or two across.

Twitter started off with the idea that it would be able to operate via the cellular networks using the text message protocol. Twitter reserves 20 characters of the total available for use behind the scenes to make their system work (basically, that 20 characters holds the tweeter's unique user ID), leaving the user with 140 characters of a text message's 160 character limit. So, a tweet is 140 characters long.

And snapchat won't delete your pics anymore. These companies are idiots if they try to go away from the thing that makes them unique

Is this a sign that Twitter is starting to die?

One thing I like about twitter IS the character limit - not interested in reading walls of text which I've started to despise about FB. If they want to do this, just have it shortened with a ... link to click on after 140 characters to expand.

I don't use it much either, and I definitely have zero desire to hear more of what most Twitter users have to say.
