I know a Gen Z'er who stays up till 2 and 3 am watching people eat on YouTube. This entire generation is such a weird mess.

I still can't believe Twitch was Justin.TV until about 10 yrs ago.

Had to be one of the absolute best tech business moves in history. The company literally went for from pirating TV shows and movies on a loop to bmbeing able to hand out $100M deals to a dude to play video games.

What a feat.

It’s the same as watching other people play sports.

The deal is not from twitch, it's from a rival platform called kick. The crazy thing is it's not exclusive so he can still stream on twitch too

I’ll watch some NES and SNES playthroughs occasionally

Not sure why you think it’s such a big difference from watching old sports highlights

This is just soap opera to capture the attention of the loser customers. There is no way that changes hands. Same goes for lots of sports. Until I see banking data and a signed agreement I call bullshite.

Maybe. The guy does have 70-80k people watching every time he goes live. He’s not my cup of tea, but the guy pulls numbers. I’d honestly like to see the break down on how the big names get paid through ads, subs, sponsorships etc.

Not my cup of tea, but people have always watched other people play video games. Whether it was in an arcade huddled around the newest game, or @ home with your friends watching while only a few people played @ a time.

This guy can retire after 2 years and never have to touch a video game again, good for him.

How in the heck does he make money playing video games? Who pays him? With what incentive? Do people really pay to watch him play? Are there really enough payers watching him play that it warrants $100 MM? This makes no sense like NIL. Who is benefiting off giving Angel Reese over $1 mil to where they get a return of greater than $1 mil? I can guarantee Angel Reese posting 5 posts on instagram of whatever brand is not going to get them near $1 mil from people seeing the brand and then going out buying it. How does someone who has $100 MM or $1 M smart enough to get that money but so stupid to blow it on these "performers"

Who is dumb enough to do all this? I need to see the math.

Oh, so that Buffalo Bills kickoff return guy that's heart stopped because of a big hit during that Monday night game holds the same weight as someone playing a 3rd person shooter on Halo 3 killing another character?

It is not near the same. I'll put the difference in personalities between fans of each. Winners in life are way more likely to watch real sports than e sports. Losers in life are way more likely to watch e sports than real sports. If you're over the age of 22.

More than likely undervalued contract. The reach of social media giants and value of them is something we as a society havn't fully realized yet. Rogan got $100 million just a couple years ago, based on this deal that is way undervalued now. They asked Mr Beast if he would sell for a billion. He said hell no, maybe 10 or 20 billion.

Think of it this way. Rogan gets 8-10 million views for every podcast he does. That's the equivalent to having the reach of Monday Night Football 4 times a week
