There's really nothing more important than to get your annual physical if you want to live to a decent age.
Uncle died at 104. When he was 102, my dad - a go to the doctor way too fricking much kind of guy - insisted that Unc go get checked out so he went.
Doc asked when his last medical visit was. Unc thought for a minute and replied that it was when he joined the service.
He was in the Army between WW1 & WW2.
My wife was put on notice years ago, I am the loveable outside dog that likes to chase tennis balls and roll in the mud. Don't waste time and money bringing me to the vet because I'll get run over by a car long before I get sick and die.

and you likely have asymptomatic hypertension and atherosclerosis throughout your coronaries. ticking time bomb.

anecdotal evidence is the best evidence, i've always said that

I was diagnosed at 15 with Hashimotos Thyroiditis. My body was attacking my thyroid and actually causing me to have a hyperactive thyroid, losing weight, moody, etc. I got on meds and it evened our for several years.
Now I’m in my 30’s and starting to see the effects and impacts. It impacts every aspect of my life and not in a positive way. It is awful and anybody who says this is a fat person disease clearly doesn’t understand.
My wife also has RA and we just went gluten free about a week ago. She hasn’t had any flare ups and my leaky gut has stopped. I am the last person to say change your diet but I have been working on fixing it for 10 years now and after two weeks, gluten free has been the only thing to make an impact.
It blows all around and I feel bad for anyone who has to go through all this.

The amount of evidence that regular PCP visits, annual labs and (free) preventative health screenings help people live longer healthier lives is undeniable.

Yeah but he just gave you anecdotal evidence to the contrary. How could he possibly be wrong?

There's a very high correlation for Celiac and Hashis. Personally, gluten doesn't seem to bother me.

That's not how the thyroid works. Educate yourself.

It is not that I don't believe you, it is just that I really don't give a shite.

Stats are so binding. Anecdotal evidence rocks!

Amazing the amount of ridiculous info that gets thrown out on here. Thanks to the guy who said "anecdotal evidence rocks!"
To OP - if you go into a coma with a TSH of 17, you should hope they look for other causes. Feel bad? Absolutely. Coma - no. Yes - med is the treatment.
Thyroid cancer and genetics - absolutely a link. Not to thyroid cancer and hypothyroidism though.
Hashimotos and genetics - absolutely a link. Autoimmune diseases run in families.
To whoever posted the link to that stopthethyroid madness website - if you believe all that stuff... you're looking for excuses.
Another note - thyroid cancer for 98% of cases is not like other cancers. Youre going to die from something else. LINK
See Figure 2. A lot more dx and no change in death rate. Why? We're dx cancer that weren't going to hurt you. Actually much less aggressive treating now too.
Signed - a guy who makes a decent amount of his living treating thyroid dz
No sense in replying to me - I can't handle this thread anymore

Ah an arrogant Endo, shocking.
Always brilliant when you combine arrogance with open systems with unknown variables - in a field that wasn’t a net positive until antibiotics were invented.
I mean the only reason u guys wear white coats is to promote some sense of decorum and trust as you were butchering so many people for 500 years.
FYI - the sleeves on lab coats spread disease as the cuffs transmit from patient to patient - hence why the UK has done away with them.

Excuses for what? Can you elaborate please? There's a large lack of knowledge about the thyroid for the general population. Doctors may find these issues with someone and treat them with T4 and they never feel better. Sometimes proper treatment requires digging much deeper than simply testing TSH and treating with T4.
I'm not claiming to know more than doctors, but most doctors are so overwhelmed with the amount of patients these days, especially endos, that patients have to be their own advocate. A 5 minute office visit is hardly enough time to truly figure it what's going on with people.
ETA
Please note that I've never once mentioned weight loss, or lack thereof, in this thread. I'm solely taking about the debilitating symptoms like exhaustion and lethargy that people will feel.

I turned 30 in April, and I hadn't been to a doctor for a general checkup in several years. Found one, got a checkup, I'm healthy, but I told her that I have mild anxiety, and it had been kind of a rough year for me. We held off on giving me anything, and decided to asses on the follow up.
I went back for a follow up and told her that my anxiety had gotten better, and that I'm pretty much fine now in that department, but she still prescribed me to Lexapro. I reluctantly took it for 9 days and then flushed the rest down the toilet. Absolutely HATED how it was making me feel. Took all of my motivation and drive away, and made me feel numb emotionally.
I know that it's supposed to really work after 2 or more weeks, but I just know my body, and I didn't like the way it was changing my brain chemistry.

Sorry to hear about the health issues you and your wife are facing. Good to see you have stumbled on something that seems to be working and making your life a bit easier.
People don't realize how important good health is until it starts to go south on them, sometimes too late to do much about it unfortunately.
Hope the new diet keeps working and things improve for the both of you.
