The ME has been in a perpetual state of war for years and has no signs of slowing down. NOTHING we do can stop that. Glad we’re pulling out.

So we should stay there forever? I thought the left was for bringing everyone home?

So? Why do American parents have to sacrifice their children over the most f'd up part of the planet?

Get every single American child out of the ME, let them live with their decisions.

When it comes to the Middle East the average person in this thread should be smart enough to realize our influence in the Middle East has been a disaster.

Wholehearted agree with you. But the reality is the USA has to have a presence or our enemies will.

The Kurds fought Saddam, they fought the Iranian insurgents, and are now fighting ISIS. They are worthy of our support. And just like the Soviet defeat in Afghanistan, we are leaving a vacuum of power to which the enemy shall fill

Yeah. Stupid, stupid move by us. The Kurds have been our biggest ally against ISIS and we left them to be slaughtered.

The real question you should ask yourself is, is it in America's interests to put 50,000 troops into Kurdish territory in Iraq and Syria so as to secure the formation of the state of Kurdistan?

Because if we back Kurdish independence in Syria, it will take at least 50,000 troops to support that commitment and to win the war that is almost sure to come.

Turkey, Syria, Iran and Iraq are not going to give up that land without a fight. There’s no scenario where negotiating for the land is possible either as that’s not how their cultures work, especially over something so sensitive as a full blown state and the size of the land we're talking about here. Might makes right is the prevailing philosophy over there.

We like the Kurds, sure, but at the end of the day what's in it for us to make that kind of sacrifice? You do that and you now have Iraq, Iran and Turkey forming a formal alliance against you to do God knows what.

And the way I see it it's an either-or proposition. Turkey is going to move into Syria because Turkey is tired of Syria destabilizing their southern border. You can't stop that with the 50 or 100 American troops you have left. So either you go all in with 50,000 troops or more to secure an independent Kurdistan, which eventually leads to the gobbling up of a good third of southern and western Turkey and a major war in the process, or YEAH, it's time to get out.

All of you who support endless war in the Middle East feel free to go to your nearest recruiting station first thing tomorrow morning and sign up.

I agree and we are going to continue to support them by arming them. If they wanna send troops to another country we can train them. They sent a lot of troops to Germany for training in the past. No need for American troops in Syria

So you're arguing for perpetual warfare? Look if we're going to do a total pullout of Syria let's do it, however this is not it. We will still have troops in Syria

These same people fled ISIS and left Yazidi women and kids to capture in Iraq.

That was the Iraqi Kurdish (the KRG). The PKK (the "terrorists" according to Turkey) were the ones who actually enabled an escape corridor for the remaining Yazidis.

So my question to those that disagree with Trump. Y’all are perfectly fine with American troops being killed in Syria to protect Kurds against Turkey, who have already been fighting for centuries?

ETA: crickets

I tend to get my news from npr podcasts, Reddit, TD, and Ben Shapiro podcast

It's really crazy to see the vast difference in the way news is interpreted and twisted by news sources and people. Reddit is so far left (Trump can do no right) so much of TD is so far right (Trump can do no wrong), NPR seems to be left-leaning, Shapiro is obviously right-leaning. I have no chance of forming any coherent opinion on shite bc it just flies by so fast and I don't have time to digest everything.

I know that this rant has nothing to do specifically with the topic of Turks vs Kurds but that is just my reaction after hearing about it from all of the places I get my news. How does anyone have time to keep up with this shite?

Yep, lots of dumb in this thread, people in a perpetual state of TDS that they don’t realize that we don’t need to be over there and Trump is doing our service members a favor. Trump isn’t president of Syria FFS, and he has no obligation to keep our troops there to fix Obama and Hillary’s frick ups.

The Kurdish situation isn’t binary. There are solutions available. China doesn’t officially recognize Taiwan but they still exist due to a delicate diplomatic balance.

Most of Northern Pakistan is run by tribal leaders independent of the government in Islamabad

There are even parts of Spain that operate semiautonomously

Yes it was the Pershmerga, there were some Yazidis who escaped with help after the Kurds publicly got ridiculed. What was bad was the whole world was watching her they still fled. It was in a mountainous region so some were able to hide. Eventually the Kurds went back and opened up a corridor after being questioned why they fled. By then many Yazidis had already been captured and killed. Maybe it was the PKK that went back I don’t remember

General Lee once came to this board to out a terrorist dry run at a Walmart in Illinois that turned out to be a Mexican with a backpack shopping. He is a bastion of world political knowledge.

Funny you mention the Soviets in Afghanistan. We armed the Mujahedeen to the teeth, only to fight them decades later. That's called blowback. Even assuming we stay and help create an independent Kurdistan, do you want the political wing of the communist PKK to run the country? They've been deemed a terrorist group by our own government for decades. There aren't any good options here. How many more American kids have to come home in flag-draped caskets so the politicians in this country can save face and continue to use our military as the police force for their own geopolitical games?
