Your call mate. What’s your risk tolerance. If you save $10k on the purchase price and have to pay $5k later for fixes, you still come out ahead $5k minus a headache.

Just throwing random numbers out there, and the future repairs from the replaced engine job could run you more than the savings. Just something to think about.

I've never owned one but have always liked them too and they last forever and have crazy resale value. But we sat in one a week or two ago when shopping for the Mrs. new vehicle and I have to say I wasn't impressed given the price.

You could get an SR5 or Limited 4x4 Tundra for the price of some of the Tacomas. I have a hard time paying more for a mid size than a decent trim 4x4 full size, that's just crazy to me. They weren't very roomy either even though they are bigger than they used to be. I personally liked the new Bronco much more and you can get in a loaded Bronco for cheaper than the Tacoma we looked at.

New motors in those too but Toyota has a really good track record of making really good motors, if a Tacoma is what i wanted, I personally would feel pretty confident that the new motor will be reliable as well.

haven't asked my FIL about them though. probably so new he hasn't seen many.

Baw, big Toyota/ Lexus fanboy here…so it pains me to say this, but I would absolutely NOT purchase any Tundra with that twin turbo 6 right now. No way in hell

But my FiL has 1794 w/ that same engine w/Hybrid set-up &it’s been flawless. Still, if it were my money, it wouldn’t be on a 3rd gen.

That was the 2021 and older models that are selling for more now if in good shape than they did new. Jury still out on the new ones.

I have a 2019 with 33K miles. They will never match that truck style or engine.

Jury is still out on that in my opinion. 2025 models are also experiencing some of these main bearing failures.

Yeah, it wasn't just manufacturing debris left behind but also a design flaw with the engines themselves. I seriously doubt Toyota truly fixed all those issues, like GM's L87's, there will continue to be problems.

Well it was done by Toyota.

Probably not, more than likely completed by a local mechanic to the store. I’d seriously doubt Toyota would send an engineer/tech to replace the engine…

Just picked up a 2024 tundra limited iforce. 47k. To my knowledge they stand behind their issue with the motor, loaner included. I also added a 7/120k warranty. It definitely isn’t the V8. At least I won’t be suprised if and when it does go out. Now the 15mpg, that’s a different story.

Let me help you:

You want it, but you're conflicted about its reliability.

You are hoping the OT will persuade you that it will be reliable.

This is a life decision. I would advise you to consider not using the OT for one of those little guys.

At any rate, the real questions are: how pissed do you get when shite like this goes south? Are you a patient man?

This board is something else with Toyota.

If that was a GM or Ford with an engine replacement with that low of miles you would be drug through shite just for looking at it.

I wouldn't go near ANY vehicle under t years old with a full engine replacement. Pretty sure the issues are still happening with the tundra as well, I've seen several online that are one 2nd or 3rd engines.

But hey it's a yota!

Part of it is the fact that Toyota stands behind their product. The second is resale. I still get calls from my dealer to buy back my 2019 Tacoma. The prices on those are within $1-$2k of what I paid for it. That’s amazing for a 7 year old vehicle.

Update: I’m not getting it. I want it badly, but the more I research, the more I lean towards the risk being greater than the reward.

You would be making a huge gamble that may or may not work out and if it doesn’t you will be stuck with a vehicle no one wants
