This is proving to be very difficult. He’s a ridiculously reliable worker. He just struggles with communication and I suspect when he goes on interviews that’s when things go south.

He has an associates degree for electrician work and excelled in school. If he’s given tasks he will complete them without fail especially if they are repetitive tasks. He’s a stickler for following all rules.

I just don’t know how to help him along to take the next step and to have a potential employer take him seriously. He’s 24 so it’s not like I can go on an interview with him. His social and communication skills are his Achilles heal.

He has a drivers license and owns his own car. He’s currently working at Rouses and trains others on how to handle filling online orders and manages most of that himself. I wish I had a good idea how to help him take that next step. He completed his electrician degree a year and a half ago and has gone on many interviews but never received an offer.

Any ideas?

Sounds like an ideal employee. Gets his job done and doesn't talk. I’d pay top dollar for a fella like that

I’m thinking he’d do better in a small scale commercial/residential business with someone who can take him under his wing and groom him to eventually take on jobs on his own

He needs to be with a 3-4 man operation where they do a lot of new construction, where there's lot of repetitive work.

Is there a big subdivision going up near yall? Maybe ride out there and see if you can out who is doing the electric work and call them?

Honest and best answer you’ll get.

1. Find Homebuilder assoc in your parish/county
2. Go through their directory for “electricians”
3. Call a half dozen on Monday, explain your situation
4. Get their emails, and email them his resume
5. State that you’re happy to come along for any interviews if they’d like

Your nephew will have a new job in next 2 weeks.

I know a small town electrical contractor here in SWLA that would probably love having him. He loves giving young guys an opportunity and has done really well for himself. Find you some small outfit that has some caring guys and I bet they'll take him. Heck, T3 Electrical services (Formerly Linxwiler) in the BR area, their owner is an incredible dude and I bet they'd give him a shot but no guarantees.

I have a friend in this very position. Her son has Asperger's and graduated from Southeastern a year ago. He has excellent references from McDonalds where he worked for four years during college. Sadly, he quit that job upon graduation, thinking he'd be hired quickly.
He hasn't been able to get past the interview process. I told her she needs to get him to practice interviewing with several professionals in similar jobs to what he's looking for, which is what I recommend you do.

Have you ever looked at the electrical runs in houses built to a price point? They will make someone with even the slightest bit of OCD crazy much less someone with Asbergers. I am a bit OCD and ran the electrical for our camp and the inspector went on the whole time he was there about how neat and organized the wiring was. I didn't really know what he meant until I later went into some houses being built in the neighborhood.

I honestly don't know what niches of electrical work would reward someone like that but there has to be an area that appreciates exacting work and that area is where he will likely be the best fit.

In the electrical world he would need to speak up when he doesn't know what he's doing to ask questions. Thankfully there isn't a lot of live work being done these days but he needs to speak up in any trade job to ensure he is doing things correctly.

Tell him start his own company. Asberger's Electric has a nice ring to it.

Red to red, black to black, and ground to ground baw. Wiring sounds right up an autistic dudes alley, probably be the best electrician within a country mile if he can get on. Definitely better than all the 50 something alcoholics that permeate the profession
