It’s very difficult to convey to someone who hasn’t been around Canada exactly how sparsely populated it is as you go north.
You drive north for awhile and then the road ends.
Not figuratively, but literally.
As in you cannot go further north without a plane.

Around 90% of the population lives within 100 miles of the US border.
Canada gets a lot of kneejerk hate on here lately, for reasons I won't derail the thread with, but I've had a kickass time on all my trips to Canada.

Canada. But that is just a guess.

Fly-in fishing trips or trips to Sunnyvale Trailer Park?

What I was trying to say is if you tell me the State I will know less than if you tell me the city.
What you should have said is that you had no idea Canada does not have any states.

The preferred nomenclature is Snow Mexicans.

The Canadians I’ve met have had superiority complexes.

I’m from Toronto. Oh, what part of Canada is that? It’s in Alberta. Ok, you’ve just given me less information.
Most Americans can’t fill out a 50 states map, yet that doesn’t stop us from telling Non-Americans what state we are from when they ask. Everyone overestimates how much outsiders know about their local geography.

So if they ask, I shouldn’t tell them?

If it makes you feel better, I once went to a bar in Hamilton, Ontario, and the bartender thought I had a fake id.
She didn't think Louisiana was a real place.

So you started a thread just to say you are uninformed about the geography of another country?
OPB: I’m from St George.
Italian: Oh, what part of the US is that?
OPB: It’s in Louisiana.
Italian: Ok, you’ve just given me less information.

If they ask you which state, tell them. If you’re traveling abroad and someone asks you where you’re from, “the United States” will suffice for the overwhelming majority of people who ask. If they then ask “where in the US is that”, describing the geography (southern, central, etc) will be more helpful than naming a state unless you live in California, Florida, Texas, or New York, which tends to be the states they can most frequently identify on a map.

Literally the opposite of what I said.
