Now at 43 I’m a very nervous skier because I have the constant worry of shredding a knee or just falling in general because falling as a kid was fun; falling as an adult you have to sit there for a minute and take inventory of what all you hurt.
Man, this is all spot on and extra funny that I'm 43 and today was day 1 of my family's ski vacation.

I'm by no means a good skier since I learned after 40 but liked you said, greens should be easy, after just a couple of hours of getting the hang of it and falling down a bunch.

And likely spent $200+ for the privilege.

Baseball, football and basketball, but now I’m a 40+ year old dude way past my playing days.

This was me. I spent two days on the fricking bunny slopes with a coach. Pretty sure the dude wanted to kill me at the end of day one. Not sure what the disconnect was, but I just couldn’t do it. Easily the most frustrating thing I’ve ever tried to do. To make it even more deflating/Insulting/embarrassing is my son skiing backwards down the slope filming my dumbass trying to ski.

frick all that. Summer in the west is better anyway.

Skiing is fun and I’m fairly decent at it but I learned at a young age.

Snowboarding is the greatest athletic failure of my lifetime.

It took me a few days to get off the green runs. Now I can ski almost every run on the mountain. It’s a skill that takes practice like anything else

First and only time I went skiing I ended up with a torn ACL and fractured femur. I’m happy to chill in the hot tub

Get a coach. It’s worth it.

If you are falling on your arse, you aren’t leaning forward over your skid enough. Which is what 90% of beginners do.

It’s pretty much the opposite of water skiing. You pull against a boat so you lean back. Snow skiing, you work with the slope so you lean forward. You lean differently when turning as well. Snow plow until you get the hang of it.

There is a reason your skis are about twice as long in the front as they are in the back. Put your weight out over the front of your skis.

I thought I was leaning forward when learning to ski, until I really started leaning forward. Then is just started clicking.

Did you take a lesson? That really helps. I've been skiing many times but just decided I didn't really like it. I like less clothes when I'm on vacation.

If I ever decide I’m dumb enough to try skiing again, I’ll pay for lessons first, if not, I’m gonna get seriously hurt

There's enough people on the mountains. If he wants to quit leave him be.

The rest of us appreciate it.

The worst thing older adults can do is take a group class that has kids in it, they will demoralize the hell out of you.

I actually thought I could teach my wife (GF at the time) to ski in her early 20s but I had been skiing since I was 4 and I just couldn't understand how some things were not purely intuitive. I gave up for both our sakes and she got a one-on-one coach and was skiing blues by the end of that next day.

One thing that is important to having a vertical learning curve on the slopes is not missing leg day. However, it isn't just quad/ham/calf strength you need good secondary muscle strength like adduction/abduction or your legs will be shot while your brain still plenty of juice left.

I love skiing. Nothing more beautiful than seeing the train barrel through the gorge coming down Mary Jane.

Snow skiing is the best sport known to man. I’d move out of LA to do it more often.

I was a decent water ski kid, first one of my friend to learn to drop a ski, big rooster tails, owned my own ski etc.

Apparently, that makes you a dangerous and terrible snow skier as everything is the opposite. I end up going way way too fast and end up with fantastic crashes as my mind wants to cut back hard, get it on the edge, lean out etc. i actually look really good for about half a dozen or so cuts then bam. I refuse to do the triangle shite.

Last trip at Aspen I broke my wrist on last damn run, in a blue/green. I actually made 5 or 6 no fall runs so I thought I was getting it.

I got tired of looking for my ski poles so I put my hands through the damn wrist strap just like the instructor told me not to do. (Great guy and he told me your son is going to be ok, I am really worried about you though. You go way too fast for your ability. ) He was right.

Skiing is weird but not totally hard. Falling is a mfer. Getting up etc is exhausting.

Take a snow mobile ride brother, you can do that

Boarding has to be less painful, my family would let me try it but we used to ride surfboards all the time growing up, wind surfing etc, and it looked way more similar than skiing.
