‘Melo fought the law; and the law won.
Tonight gonna be rough on a 17-yo upper middle class kid.
Went from a temperpedic to a 3” vinyl covered foam mat. Air Jordans for prison Reeboks. A plush toilet to a stainless steel shitter with no seat. Dino nuggies for baloney, wonderbread and a fruit cup.
First night gonna hit hard. Only thing comparable would be that first night of boot camp at lights out. But this ain’t 10 weeks. Melo’s first taste of freedom 17.5 years away.

Other states have some wildly short murder penalties. In New York for example it’s possible to only get 15 for 2nd degree and 20 for 1st degree. In Louisiana it’s life in prison and death, respectively.
sentencing guidelines can be hard to follow. I know that in my state, Tennessee, murder requires you to serve 100% of your sentence, whatever that sentence may be, and it isn't generally a life sentence unless it's premeditated or you're a multiple time convicted felon. I think in this instance, were this in Tennessee, he'd have to serve day for day for whatever sentence was imposed but it wouldn't have been premeditated first degree murder either so he wouldn't have gotten life. Just speculating here, but I do agree it's interesting how sentencing works state to state

He is 19 right now. So I assume the clock starts now.
correct. he's been out on bond, so he won't get any credit for time served because he hasn't served any. Still, to be eligible for parole at 36 is a joke for what he did. he ended a kid's life before it started and at 36 he still has a chance to live a decently full life of his own

35 is a fricking joke for outright murdering someone.
Had a feeling the "we're not going to ruin his entire life for this" soft shite would pop up at some point whether in conviction or sentencing. He's likely to do half of that and be out before his 36th birthday. fricking pathetic.

Texas rarely grants parole for a convicted murderer at their first hearing, and they aren’t eligible for another 5 years. Likely Karmelo serves a solid chunk of his next 35 years in the TDCJ.

Gag order is over so the Metcalf’s can talk.
They were SWAT’d at home and at work multiple times. Harrassed. Sent death threats.
After their son was murdered.
These are the people we are dealing with

Probably why Metcalf's dad was breathing fire during the victim impact statements (why these weren't before sentencing is a mystery). He was a full blown apologist pussy initially.

No one knows how they are going to react to such tragedy coupled with a media firestorm.

Yea I thought at minimum he’d get 50 years. 35 is a fricking joke for outright murdering someone.
In Texas you have to serve at least half. Unless he wins on appeal, he's likely stuck in there for 17+.

Austin Metcalf's parents read victim impact statements to Karmelo Anthony after sentencing | wfaa.com LINK
[/quote]"We were robbed!" he said directly to Karmelo Anthony. "Don't look down!"
"This was never about race," the father said. "It is about right and wrong."
Jeff Metcalf was looking and talking directly to Anthony, who still had his head down.
"My boys weren't bullies," he said. "I've been swatted six times," referring to harassment by activists and others targeting the Metcalf family.
"My son's death destroyed the person I used to be," the father said. "He does not exist anymore."
"People think grief is sadness, it is not. It is rage. Pure unfiltered rage," he said as he slammed his fist on a table, his voice rising.
"You don't belong in this community!" he told the 19-year-old defendant. "A piece of me died with my son, and I'm expected to keep living."
"You're going to prison. I forgave you the day it happened. I don't forgive what you did," he told Anthony. "You can't look me in the eyes but you can stab my f------ son!"

I just gained a lot of respect for that man.
Him rushing out to forgive KA right after it happened never set right with me. But I’m a fire and brimstone, flood the world, turn cities to ash kinda Christian, not a turn the other cheek one. I’m one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet. Do anything for a friend. But I also have a penchant for vengeance and retribution against those that commit evil acts.
