I have a lot of experience with trees removed and trimmed at house. Spent over 5 k to take one out with a crane last year.. I have them trimmed every few years.

If he can not show you insurance ….not good..fwiw you should have him give you a bid with his companies logo.. information etc.. on it should also document his coverage.

Trees can kill in a heartbeat..

Anytime you have a contractor on your property you begin taking on liability.. be careful

can the trees be laid down or is climbing/bucket true involved?

If they can be laid down, that may be a legit price, it not, then it'll be near that price per tree.

Prices for this type thing are negotiable, they always come high, they know you'll negotiate. Get the stumps ground, they'll throw it in for free.

Crane jobs are pretty fun if they let you ride the ball up into the tree.

Glad to see you’re maintaining your trees.

Most people in Louisiana do not pay to have their trees trimmed regularly. It’s a shame.

Yep. I just bought an investment property in a wooded subdivision. The trees on the property were kept similarly to pubes on a 70’s porn star. I had a guy bring his crew to prune trees, make canopies, etc. the next door neighbor has a bushy forest in their yard protruding into mine. They cut all the bamboo, etc to the property line, and the neighbor had the audacity to come out and yell all the tree guys for trimming her trees. She backed off when he explained to her that I could legally send her the bill for this.

End result is a transformed property with better curb appeal and just a pleasant sight to come home to.

He probably doesn’t have insurance, but how bad do you want them on the ground? Do power lines and service lines to you’re home and the neighbors come into play? Chances are everything will be fine, but if he rips the service wire out of your house or tears down a 3 Phase, or God forbid damages a house, they want be sticking around.

I would take the chance. I have a big oak that needs cut down and was quoted 3,300 and I just can't afford that right now. I would though if someone said they would do it for 1,700. I would be out there watching to make sure it doesn't look he is about to screw up or get hurt.

Same thing happened to me. If he comes through with proof follow up. Call his agent and verify that his policy is current and in good standing. This is normaI did the same thing a few years ago and it worked out. Get documentation in your hand.

I hired a guy that said he had insurance he cut the tree down if fell on my dog cage took out half my awning put some holes in my roof and took out a fence. He said that he would do all the fixing by himself turns out he didn't have any insurance I called my insurance company they said all tree guys say they have insurance but really don't my insurance covered everything. They said i should ask him to leave the property before he does more damage.Costs me a thousand on the deductible and they went after the tree cutter who
Disappeared. The insurance cut me a check for $9800.00 I fixed most everything myself except the roof. Hired Sears roofing got the whole roof done for $2800.00 his seven Mexicans had it done in 6 hours. This was all before Gustav hit.

We've done sub work for legitimate tree contractors when they needed heavy equipment. $1700/ day is more like just what WE would charge them for the day.

For 3 large, DEAD trees in a sketchy spot, that's outrageously low. The cost for the insurance these guys have to carry makes it an almost guarantee that his will be phony. I've had multiple tell me it's their greatest expense. That along with the inherent dangers of the job and expensive equipment needed should give you pause when you get a quote this low.

I could be wrong, I frequently am, but if it is legitimate insurance, the guy must hate profit margins.

As a general rule I tend to just ignore people who knock on my door offering to do work unsolicited. Theyre obviously just looking for work, and there is likely a reason they dont currently have work.

From my experience, Latin American culture does not believe in insurance or paying taxes. I think part of it stems from the government/business corruption that they came from in their country. Paying taxes is just lining the pockets of an authority who thinks they are a king and treats everyone beneath him as peasants, and insurance is a scam and something that only a mafia organization charges for.

They don't understand that in the states you will get more business if you show that you are reputable and having your ducks in a row. His market is the low income lowest bidder with little to lose in an accident. The family living in a $700K house has so much more to lose, and will pay more for a service if it means better protection and peace of mind.

That being said, when I come across Latin Americans who have insurance, I compliment them. The ones who do demonstrate that they adapted to the US and see it as a cost of having a successful business.

I own rental property and the owner of the house next door had a tree taken down about 4 months ago.

Just a "simple, easy" job. The tree guy was licensed, but a one horse operation. He lost control of the tree and it dropped onto one of my rental units, doing about $50k worth of damage. It didn't look that bad but construction costs aren't cheap these days. He had insurance, so other than the headache of lining up contractors, I was made whole. If he didn't have insurance the homeowner (you) would have had to pay for the damages, or be sued.

Bottom line- hire a guy with insurance,

Seriously, call someone who knows what they are doing especially if you have neighbors. Tree Masters in NOLA does a good job, maybe a little more expensive than Zeigler, who also does a good job.

The fact that he can't show you his insurance or provide you a bond# should tell you everything

You’re talking about mishaps that happen in a split second. Pretending to be the safety guy isn’t going to help when a saw kicks back or a tree/branch starts falling in an unforeseen direction.
