I am someone who has already cut my food budget to the bone and can't really cut it any further. I need the job market to start improving so I can make more income. I already almost never eat beef or most seafood because it's unaffordable. Chicken keeps going up and up and getting closer to unaffordability for me. I'm basically getting by via stretching cheap cuts of pork as far as possible over rice and beans for at least half of my meals. I've even had to give up on buying a fair number of fruits and vegetables that were once common in my fridge. All of the snack foods and breakfast items are long gone. Alcohol is a luxury bought sparingly. I'm still mostly cooking real food, but if prices go up any further, I'll be on strictly struggle meals (i.e. ramen and canned meat) from here on out until I can find a job.

Sorry to hear that for you.

I work in a counter-cyclical industry so I actually am more secure than I was 5 years ago.

Eggs are always one of the cheapest staples for me. You can still get a 30 pack for less than $5 at some places

Gas prices are finally coming down in my area. That alone should lower most prices.

ETA. Gas prices in general, that is.
Best case scenario: low steady inflation and real wage growth. Prices for most things aren't ever returning to pre-covid.

The only thing that’s going to change inflation is a recession. There’s a lot of bloat out there, a lot of young people are very spoiled by how much they make and what they can afford compared to years past. They may feel poor but their parents and grandparents didn’t have near the luxuries they assume to be normal.

I’m not suggesting that happen, but it’s the truth. And healthcare insurance costs are absurd.

I’d prefer if a few of those “luxuries” didn’t exist, or at least weren’t so dominant, but they’ve embedded themselves so deeply into our culture that it’s become not impossible, but definitely harder, to live a normal American life without them. I’d give up my cell phone and internet in a second if it meant the country could get back the kind of national optimism we had through most of the 80s and 90s.

Yeah, a pound of ground beef at Walmart costs god damn near $8 and 4 years ago it was barely $5. It almost doesn’t make sense to go to the grocery store and cook. Everything costs so much I’d rather go out.

The big bag of Community Coffee is now $19.97 at Walmart. That's my one economic indicator.

Biden’s handlers removed coffee from the price index.

Where are you going out to eat where it’s cheaper than buying your own groceries and cooking your own meal? I can’t find any lunch spot that is under $20 for one person. Except a local burger joint that’s around $15 for a cheeseburger and fries.
Groceries are high but not as high as dining out around here.

No it’s not

You should say a prayer at night and thank God your family left you a successful business. Because you’re a bonafide idiot

THIS. My wife and I went out to eat Friday night at a decent restaurant (not fine dining but not Chilis level either). I had a prime rib sandwich and she got lasagna. One drink each. Split a dessert. Tax and tip out the door, $128.

Yeah the little Greek food place I like is gonna cost $20 for a lunch special and a Lebanese tea and tip. And that’s if you get it to go.

I can’t imagine what the cost is for taking the kids out to dinner after a ball game or some shite.
