re: Toyota, Yamaha working on hydrogen-burning V8 engine. Is this the Tesla killer?

Uh no. Also, Musk literally laughed at the notion of a hydrogen powered engine. Literally a punchline to him.
So the guy who sells electric cars laughs at the notion of a hydrogen powered engine?
Shocking.
So the people at Toyota are just clueless and like to waste money?

FedGov will probably try to outlaw hydrogen. They want you in an electric car.
But I would definitely be interested in one if we can figure out a refueling design that was easy, convenient, and safe.

could use electricity to make hydrogen via electrolyzers
Ding ding ding.
A little saltwater and electrolysis... You get some bleach and hydrogen all in one. Power the engine that charges the battery that fuels the electrolyzers all while keeping our streets clean. Everyone wins except everyone

So let’s burn fuel sources to make electricity, to make hydrogen, to turn engines.

That’s at atmospheric pressures.

Hydrogen has to be kept at -435F to stay liquid, which it has to stay at in storage.
Or, you could compress it like we currently do with natural gas and burn it as a gas.

Just get some hydrogen peroxide and take the peroxide out. Pretty simple

Imagine how different our life would be if we had to store liquid gases below their boiling point at standard pressure.

It's a challenge just to keep hydrogen from leaking out of a tank.
Can be done…just need a set of 30 weight ball bearings.

Just noticed you said V8 engines. At least the Toyota is nothing like that. Fill with hydrogen, there is a fuel cell in the vehicle that charges the battery (it's an electric vehicle) and the only emission is a water vapor.

The price of hydrogen will go up as demand goes up. So the attraction off lower operating cost will eventually diminish.

From what I've seen... I wouldn't underestimate Elon Musk. Dude had manufacturing and supply chain stuff in place before some problems/inventions had even been solved.
You do know that the only reason that Tesla is still in business is due to a decade of huge tax credits for electric vehicles.
Also, competition is coming, unless you think that every other manufacturer in the world is going to strike out on their EV designs.
Now you add in Toyota, known for quality, who is working on a hydrogen V8.
I know that Elon has a loyal army of fan boys, but competition is coming and to think that they will all strike out and that we will all be driving Teslas is delusional and illogical.

quote:Yeah, for a given size hydrogen tank that you're hauling around, you can drive roughly twice as far using a fuel cell and electric motors than by combusting it in a piston engine. I don't even know if it's theoretically possible to build a combustion engine that is more efficient than today's fuel cells.
there is a fuel cell in the vehicle that charges the battery (it's an electric vehicle) and the only emission is a water vapor.
Literally the only reason to build an engine like OP's link is because you like the sound and the feel.

Literally, nobody in this thread has said this.
Elon Musk is a bright guy no matter how you slice it.

The Toyota Mirai is hydrogen fuel cell and it cost about $100 to fill it and only has a 250-300 mile range. And only available in CA.
It’s a tech for tree huggers.
