Toyota struggling to sell the once iconic Prius hybrid

When it debuted in Japan in 1997, it became the world's first mass-market hybrid electric vehicle and demand exploded when it reached the U.S. three years later.
The Prius delivered around 50 miles a gallon and had far more interior space than the typical fuel-saving minicar — all at an affordable price. That made it the best-selling car of any form in California, and the best-selling hybrid vehicle worldwide earlier this decade.
But, as an updated 2019 version of the Prius gets ready to roll into U.S. showrooms, Toyota is facing a difficult situation. Sales of the Prius have been tumbling for several years and were down 23.2 percent for the first 11 months of 2018. The new version delivers updates Toyota hopes will revive the hybrid's momentum, including a new all-wheel-drive system that could improve its appeal in the Snowbelt. But whether that will be enough is uncertain and company officials admit they're struggling to figure out what to do next

The RAV4 is now Toyota's best-selling American model, last year nudging past the familiar Camry sedan. And some observers believe the hybrid version of the cross-over utility vehicle could out-sell Prius in 2019. As a result, many are questioning whether Toyota even needs the Prius anymore.

Still, Toyota officials concede that the 2019 updates aren't going to be enough to keep Prius a viable player going into a future where, as Brinley points out, virtually all products will use some form of electric drive. General Motors and Volkswagen are planning to eliminate gas and diesel drive technology entirely.

I can hardly stand to look at it. I don't know how anyone could be able to park it in their driveway.

It's served it's purpose. It showed that hybrid tech is viable for a mainstream offering, and gave them a testbed to develop it to implement it into more conventional models.
You can get almost the same MPG in the larger and less dorky looking Camry hybrid and if you need utility you can go with the Rav 4 or Highlander hybrids.

It’s obviously because they can’t keep Dirty Mike and the Boyz from doing crazy sex shenanigans in them.

The latest version is hideous.

Toyota Prius, the most popular hybrid is not actually that efficient. Their ultimate ‘green car’ is the source of some of the worst pollution in North America; it takes more combined energy per Prius to produce than a Hummer.

This is extremely misleading There's a reason they only stop it at production, and not actually operating.

New Camry isn’t doing that well either. They are pushing a lot to rental and taxi fleets.
RAV4 is now Toyota’s primary family car. They move 30,000-40,000 units per month.

That's a fairly hot take considering all the new ones you see on the road without commercial plates. They aren't the leading seller that they used to be, but the still sell a shitload of them to individuals. America in general is trending toward crossovers, as you pointed out.

He’s not incorrect. The nickel batteries have an immense carbon footprint. The raw materials are mined in the US and Canada, shipped to Japan for battery production, and shipped back to the US for final assembly. That doesn’t include what happens to the batteries after disposal.
Toyota hybrids are actually horrible for the environment.

Don’t you have a Prius you share ride LNCHBX?
Gas prices and the move to small SUV’s is hurting the Prius more than anything. And other hybrids. You can get almost as good mileage in a 4 banger civic also.
I will say, in general the prius’s Tend to have good maintenance records and their reliability has been better than expected from what I’ve seen.

Gas dropping from $4+ a gallon to $1.80 a gallon is a bitch for cars which sell based on gas mileage.
Especially considering the other costs associated with hybrid ownership.

They are one of the most painful ugly cars you can buy today.
I get the financial idea behind it but it’s just so ugly, i can’t bring myself to even want to drive one

You should google before running with false info.

But do the environmental impacts of hybrid vehicle production outweigh the long-term benefits of driving a cleaner running automobile? That answer is a resounding "no." If you drive both a conventional and hybrid car for 160,000 miles (257,495 kilometers), the conventional vehicle requires far more energy to operate and emits far more greenhouse gases over its lifetime, significantly canceling out any imbalance during the production stage [source: Burnham et al].

if I remember right you have to drive the Hummer 200,000 miles to equal the pollution

Maybe.
I know nickel refining is about as bad as you're gonna get.
Oh well.
Not arguing with the OTs resident contrarian.
