Then you haven't experienced a northern winter.

There is a 25 degree difference from 100 to 75

There is a 60 degree difference from 15 to 75

Shelter, clothing...

and heat.

Not sure what was confusing about that, but here you go. Take that thread and run with it, friend.

People built houses in the south with high ceilings and open windows to the south. Therefore you can make adjustments.
Up north you better have wood stacked up to burn. You're surely not getting out in the snow to find any.

North without heat for sure. A/C wasn't always around, and many people are still around who know what it's like to live in the south without it. You just drink water, stand in the shade, go for a swim, whatever. There's always a way to cool off. Up north where it snows relentlessly for months with subzero temperatures, you can't survive without a heat source. When it gets that cold, it's just fricking cold, and there's no real way to escape it.

For the most part, they didn't ; dummy.

Reread the OP, he clearly states in the north without heat. THat means you're living in a cold assed apartment with no furnace, no fireplace, no electric heater, no gas heater, nothing.

Fireplaces have been around for at least 2,000 years, prior to that people avoided the cold north if they could. People have always lived in the warmer southern climates though as proven by archeological digs.

The majority of "cold weather deaths" in the USA are caused by heart attack from physical activity in the cold. I've always found it weird they categorize heart attack or pulmonary issues as cold "caused by cold" The overwhelming number of deaths due to heat is directly relating to overheating.

Would overheating not entail physical activity in the heat as well? I would guess that most overheating deaths don't happen when you're just sitting in a rocking chair in the shade

Incorrect bruh. You don't make cold. Air conditioning is either the addition of heat or the removal of heat. No one makes cold.

I laugh at those that say the South is more difficult because "In the North, you could add additional layers"

I had the honor to serve as a topside watch in Connecticut during the winter while I was in the Navy

One watch stands out in particular because it was 0* with a wind chill of -18*...

I was in full artic gear shivering my balls off for 4 hours. I couldn't imagine surviving that for 4 months

I wonder how many people that say you can put more clothes on in the cold have ever lived in an extreme cold weather climate.

Not 10’s-20’s. I mean -20’s to -30’s. That crap is ridiculous. Having to put on 3-4 layers of clothes just to go put the trash out. Or taking an hour to change a flat tire cause you have to go inside after you take a lug off or you’d lose feeling in your fingers is way worse than walking around in shorts and flip flops cause it’s 110+.

I spent 18 months at Forth Wainwright in Alaska . Lots of days where it was -20 with a 20 MPH wind and I also spent time in the hottest of the MIddle East, and there is once again no question. The cold with no heat would be FAR worse than the heat without a/c.

South without AC is way worse. You can always get warm with clothes and sleeping bag.

Well, you do have an advantage, in the extreme cold you can always huddle up with your alabama sister/wife for warmth.

When I was in NY I realized how desperate some smokers were to get a cigarette. You’d see 5-6 of them huddled together smoking outside when it was snowing so hard you couldn’t see across the parking lot.

Good idea, die from hypothermia before the smoke gets your lungs.

Actually, if it is snowing, it is not deathly cold.
Extreme cold comes with no cloud cover.

Yeah, that was a total surprise to a Louisiana boy when I got to NY. You’d think it would be warmer if the sun was out. Nope, not up there in the winter.

He doesn't clearly state anything. In his post, he said he read that landlords were required to provide heat, but not AC. I'm pretty sure landlords can't just provide a fireplace and call it a day. He means a heating system of some sort. OP didn't explicitly say that fires are not allowed in this scenario. Unless I'm extremely ignorant on northern tenant laws, and they can legally rent with just a fireplace.

I can't believe I'm debating this dumb hypothetical situation. Dude needs to come back and clarify.
