I think a lot of people here have no concept of how cold it can get up North. 30’s and 40’s here in the winter is nothing compared to what they get. You can’t cover up enough when it’s -20/-30 outside. You’dfreeze to death.

I guess it depends what your accustomed to. ive been in subzero temps in montana and 100+ degree heat here in Houston.

in cold you can start a fire and add layers upon layers. in the heat, sometimes not even your birthday suit can relieve you from being hot as shite. I'd say tougher to live in the south without AC than up north without heat.

Therefore the toughest has to be living up North with no heat

That was what I was trying to have the OP clarify.

If we're simply talking no central air vs. no central heat, then give me the North. A fireplace or a furnace would be plenty to keep you warm.

But absolutely no form of heat? Yeah, you would likely die, so in that scenario I'd take the south.

South without AC is merely uncomfortable unless you have some kind of health problem. Living without heat in the north is at best very difficult. At worst it can kill you. You might as well be living outdoors.

I've lived in both. The South without a/c would be miserable. The North is never without some way to compensate for cold. Even if you don't have a furnace or stove you can just bundle up.

I believe more people die in the USA from a lack of AC than a lack of heat.

I've gone an entire winter without turning on the heat before.

Yup. Need clarification. As it's written, I take it as no form of heat and no form of AC.

People are subverting it by saying "I can living without heat, I'll just build a fire."

That would be the same in the south. It would be much hotter inside than it would be outside.

Hell, the Whitehouse used to have a sleeping porch on the roof because it was too hot to sleep inside.

too cold, you can always add more clothing layers and/or build fires...too hot, you can only strip down so much

It depends on what you mean by "without heat." If I don't have central heat, but can start a fire - the north is easier. If cannot even start a fire, then the south.

I worked with a guy from Michigan that said most people up north carry candles in their trunks in the winter not for light but for heat. He said if you got caught in your car in a blizzard that one candle could heat the entire car.
