Maybe the OT will care more than PT. On phone so apologies for not copy/pasting the article. It appears they amended a House bill that had already passed the Senate committee that killed the recent attempt.

That’s doubtful.

The OTL is one of the few politics free areas on the internet. Boo on you.

It’s not tort reform. It’s lowering insurance premiums. Please get your LABI talking points straight.

I read the bill, I don't see any guarantee rates will decrease. In fact, last time I checked the insurance companies said it probably wouldn't.

So welcome to your extra jury duty for 3 days on a $10,000 case.

Most of these cases settle out as soon as a jury is chosen because one side or the other has a bad feeling about it.

Not really but when they do you get tossed back into the jury pool for the rest of the week.

Most cases settle the week or so before trial.

Some 45+ states have a jury trial threshold of $10k. They all have lower rates than Louisiana.

So? Why is it the insurance companies themselves don't think it will make a difference let alone guarantee a rate reduction?

Do you need it spelled out to you? I asked Rick Ward about his trying to scuttle this bill, and his response was, "It doesn't specifically say this will lower insurance premiums". How about, use your brain. By lowering the jury threshold, the likelihood of cases going to a jury are higher, thus, highly litigious areas like Marksville and New Orleans, who have plaintiff friendly judges who receive major contributions from trial lawyers, actually get to go to trial, as opposed to having the one sided judges rule in the plaintiffs favor. So lowering the jury threshold from $50,000 (highest in the country) to $5,000 is a good thing.
2nd, the extension of the prescriptive period from 1 year to 2 years is a concession to the trial lawyers. But it is on par with Mississippi and other states.

I'll take that over ridiculous car insurance rates.

Your argument would be brilliant and irrefutable ( except for the fact the insurance companies themselves don't think it will).

tort reform is gawd aweful for victims, if the insurance companies are backing it you know it will be bad, they always try to convince the dummies out there that it will lower their premiums and it never does

Um, they do. Obviously, you are talking out of your arse. They aren't going to reduce rates without the bill passing. Once it passes, rates will go down.

You want to know why your premiums are high? Because judges are awarding $50k to every piece of shite who claim their back hurts after a car wreck, and because lawyers like Gordon, Dudley Debosier, Gauter Amedee, act like clowns in the court room and make the insurance companies out to be the bad guys. Which is another thing this bill does, is prevent the trial attorneys from mentioning the insurance companies as defendents so they don't drum up sympathy from the jurors when the assclown trial lawyers say "state farm has plenty of money". Guess what, that money, is YOUR MONEY. So for every lawsuit they have to pay out, YOUR RATES GO UP.

Except, that the insurance companies are very excited about the bill passing. My wife works in the industry, fool.

More lawsuits = higher premiums. Doesn't take a genius to figure out that reducing the $ amount to be paid out by insurance companies will reduce premiums. Do you think these insurance companies are eating the cost?

Link?

And even if the insurance companies aren't guaranteeing anything, they'll be taken to the woodshed by the insurance commission and the consumer when rates are still higher in LA vs. comparable demographic states once this bill is signed into law.
