re: TOPS payments stopped immediately due to state budget crisis

Yes it is bs. Not every kid wants to pay double their university's worth in interest on student loans. Maybe you were extremely privileged growing up, but you seem to be focused on art degrees. So genius why not just cut that program from tops? Put certain stipulations on tops? Instead of cutting it completely. Makes no sense. Just because you don't see the value of an art degree doesn't mean said value doesn't exist

And yes. This bullshite made me come out from lurking

I find that hard to believe.
And if you were so smart, you would have taken a full ride out of state.
Wow, you are one pathetic loser!

First post and you already got in perfectly.

What that means for students and parents is that every student who is currently receiving a TOPS scholarship could end up owing the remainder of the semester’s tuition that’s not already paid. “In other words, if nothing changes, TOPS awardees will owe tuition to their schools for the current semester,” said Ashley Arceneaux, an aide to LSU President F. King Alexander.
Oh I see. This is a fear tactic that involves F King. Not surprised.
If nothing changes is the key phrase. Ie, they're getting this shite sorted out before next fall when the next tuition is due.
ETA: I highly expect all the naive chicken little students to get on Twitter and freak out

ctually it's probably a good thing if it lasts. It'll stop all the worthless fricks who go try out college for a year because Tops pays for it and end up dropping out.
Try harder

I'm surprised they didn't at least try to tighten up the requirements first.
That would have been racist. Now the only people that will qualify for aid will be minorities.

Recruit more out of state kids.
I see a lot of LA kids in Tuscaloosa

quote:They do have scholarships for high performing students. Out of state students with certain scores who apply by specific deadlines are guaranteed scholarships. The in-state program should parallel this system, rather than provide TOPS. TOPS is way too expensive and inclusive of too many students. Higher standards should be set across the board for scholarship money.
You do realize LSU has almost no scholarships for high performing students, correct?

Without tops why would a 3.8 student with a 30 on the ACT go to LSU? No incentive really
Posted on 2/11/16 at 5:08 pm to BRgetthenet
Well I can promise you some kids that go to LSU do in fact perform well. I opted to go to LSU because I wanted to stay close to home.
But screw me right?

how about convert to an ultra rights state? Legalize weed, legalize prostitution, drinking age = age of consent
tourism and industry
But no, everyone is too "we don't like that", we don't want that type of revenue.

So I graduated with a 34 ACT and a 4.2 GPA from a public HS in Baton Rouge, yet I get fricked by politics for remaining in this state and trying to graduate debt free.
I feel lots of lawsuits coming against the state if they don't fix this.

Yep. We all know you wanted to be able to bring your laundry to your mom's and freeload out of their pantry.
Grow up kid. Life doesn't stop because you have to bus tables this summer.

You can get a ~30 on the ACT and not get any help from LSU.
Well you're a fricking idiot. 30 ACT at LSU gives you $2,000/year in addition to what was TOPS. That figure is so low because students are also receiving TOPS. It essentially paid for all your fees, leaving a commuter with virtually no expenses for the semester except for books. Not sure what the university will do now that TOPS came to a screeching halt. Sure can't afford to increase scholarship amounts right now.
Posted on 2/11/16 at 5:10 pm to BRgetthenet
Hell I was taking out loans and working full time to get by during school. Losing TOPS fricking sucked, but I learned some valuable lessons along the way
