Tbh, I didn't need TOPS at all. They just gave it to me, so I took it. A lot of people with enough money get TOPS. In-state tuition is pretty low, so if people with enough money to not need tops are gonna stay in state, TOPS wouldn't matter to them. Should be structured more like grants by being needs-based IMHO

No, the original intent was to slow the brain drain, and give state residents an incentive to attend college in Louisiana and hopefully stay here.

Would be way more efficient if they'd make it similar to the military scholarships- You have to stay/work in the state the same number of years you get TOPS. Leave early and you have to pay it back to the state. Mission accomplished.

Nobody's making anybody take the scholarship. If the states giving away all this free tuition, they should make sure it's beneficial to the state.

That's why LA is broke. Too many freebies.

Base TOPS only covers the Tuition not any of the "fees" such as the academic excellence fee or flagship fee. There's also the cost of dorms and a meal plan.

This. Room and meals at SELU still runs me $5k per semester. I truly believe that people automatically think that achieving TOPS means going to school for free.

I was graduating in the early years of TOPS if I remember right, and the requirements were something like a 23 ACT and you had to finish in the top 10% of your class. Sad that the requirements have been stripped to damn near nothing.

I scored a 20 and I think I'm pretty smart. I'm very good at math, pretty good at the sciences, but pretty bad at the English stuff like creative writing and reading comprehension. There are lots of people that can get an average score but excel in their field.

They've tried to raise it before, but they were told raising standards was racist.

I know several 17-21 scores and they went to law school or got their MBA. I know people with scores over 25 and are living with their mom and don't have a damn dime to their names.

I think we get the point with the anecdotes. You know who everyone knows more? The low act scorers who went on to shite the bed in college and the high act scorers who succeeded and excelled there.

For its purpose, I don't see a real need to increase TOPS standards. If a school accepts a 20, then some TOPS funds should be available (again, this is based on the original intent of the fund). Schools just need to raise their standards if they want better students. Being eligible for TOPS with your 20 doesn't mean a whole lot if no school accepts such a low score.

Got a 32 on the ACT and did 4 years at LSU. As mentioned before, people forget about the $600 in books and $5000+/semester it costs to live and eat. While the tuition being free was huge in allowing me to not get a useless degree from USL, it didn't make for free college. There are some great RA jobs that allow for free housing and a reduced meal plan. Does being an RA suck, yes. Did I sacrifice a few years of shitty work for a free degree, yes. Was it worth it, absolutely.

Since this discussion is borderline affirmative action/reverse racist anyhow, why not just go 24 for white kids, 25 for asians, and 20 for blacks

So the families that can afford college are the ones who should not be eligible for TOPS? Wonder where the money for the TOPS program comes from? The people who actually pay taxes to support the program. It is only fair that they are able to partake in the benefit of the program as well.

Is this the thread where a bunch of guys that went to LSU made scores on the ACT that would've guaranteed them entrance to 98% of schools in the country ?
