The rankings are based on 5 factors one of which was-
Math and reading performance rank-
how scores on state assessments compare with US New's expectations given the proportions of students who are black and from low income households.
So a school like Live Oak High School, had the 48th best Math and Reading Scores in the state, but were ranked #243. They were dropped a 195 spots due to "The total minority enrollment is 8%"
Warren Easton ranked #62 in this category, despite ranking #215 in actual test scores.

Now add private schools and see what it looks like

Yep. And zachary is almost 60% minority now so gets a bump on that. Also, factors like attendance are considered in scoring. All the PRA moms in the office calling to harass parents when students aren’t there comes in handy. There is a small yet significant flight from Zachary schools to catholic/SHA, U Lab, Parkview, Episcopal and even Silliman.

Does this explain Mandeville’s ranking?

quote:Yeah. I know LSU Lab is technically public, but who are they kidding? There is a tuition and they are incredibly selective. Has no business being on a list like this.
Always kinda misleading where you have to test into some of these schools (or be selected or pay some tuition like at LSU Lab) where as Zachary and Dutchtown are truly public schools

Yeah I’m curious where some of the truly BEST schools in the state rank. I’m sure Newman and Catholic and others would be up there.

Some of those top public schools would easily still be in the mix.
Some of the top private schools are Country Day, Newman, Jesuit, the Episcopal schools(BR, Acadiana), Catholic BR, St. Joseph's, Loyola prep.

Isn’t Catholic 15-20k and Newman 20-25k? You charge that much, you better provide a top notch education.

kids that cant get into Ben Franklin or Lusher have to bite the bullet and go to Newman and/or Country Day...
I know kids that couldn't cut it at Ben Franklin or Lusher and transferred to Brother Martin and Jesuit.

Everyone involved right now should be embarrassed. They’re resting on a reputation they can no longer back up. Elementary is fantastic. Middle school has actually improved as my children have gone through. High school needs a lot of work.
Looks like UHigh has one of the lowest college readiness scores on that list. How does that happen at a school that is affiliated with a college, gets state funding, and charges tuition? Sounds like the school better do a major revamping of its program.

Hold on, so they are calculating based on minority enrollment and then having to weight the actual scores to be able to rank them? Talk about some mental gymnastics to try and make "diverse" schools look good.

I am not sure where they ranked but in the early to mid 2000s they were in the top 10-15 every year in the state.

I think that’s a little misleading if you look at how they determine that score. . Uhigh is very committed to the IB Program. It’s very rigorous and many students don’t do full IB. Students can take IB classes without going for the IB diploma but many don’t see the value in them. I have some gaps (in age) between my kids but the universities we looked at didn’t really place any emphasis on IB, especially compared to AP classes.
I think they’re adding more but they haven’t offered nearly as many AP classes compared to similar schools because of the IB Program. Also they’ve had/have some real duds teaching some of those AP and IB classes. I won’t name names or subjects but some are shocking.
They also focus a lot on dual enrollment. That’s one of the more positive things they do, in my opinion.
College readiness was not a concern with my older kids. I am concerned about my youngest and won’t hesitate to leave if there aren’t big changes next year.

No doubt the reason Lee High is so high is because of the name change.

My school ain’t ranked....system be rigged

Interesting. My teacher friends in St. Tammany have insisted for years they have the best public school system in the state.

Admissions and administration has unfortunately been “ woke” for the past few years at UHIGH. They seem to be prioritizing quotas over accomplishment.

This list is racist.
Why aren’t any of the lower income schools listed?
