Trahan is actually German in origin.

No Cheramie? No Duval? No Bailey? Where in the state are these super common? I don’t know any.
I know plenty of Cheramies from the South Lafourche area, namely the beautiful little town of Golden Meadow.
I think Cheramie (cher amie) means dear friend in French.

Kinda surprised Fusilier isn’t on there.

To the 2 down voters I got for questioning whether the name “Matherne” was, in fact, French: Please show me where I’m wrong.

Because there aren’t enough households in Mamou.

Surprised Lafleur didn’t make the list.

Did you grow up in S. Louisiana? You never run across ANYONE named Guillory? Really?
Grew up in Thibodaux... never met a Guillory. Just a fluke I guess!

I think the writer, Michael Scott, just pulled 20 "Cajun" sounding names from the list(Most Common Surnames in Louisiana[2014]) and compiled his own list. He's also mixed up a few 7/8 and 11/12. Comeaux and Blanchard should be on that list.

Romero is an Eye tie and Hispanic name

They also have one of the spanish names (Romero) on there as "cajun". To be fair as a kid I thought the Hidalgos, Romeros and Viators were cajun names and really, culturally, they were indistinguishable
There are a lot of folks in South Louisiana who might be upset to find out that their family name didn't come through Acadie. Like you said, the word Cajun is more a culture than an ancestry now.

Well I finally cracked the top 20 list.

I know at least one person with each of the first ten last names and I'm not even from South Louisiana.

Would have thought Theriot would be higher

I’ve married two of the names on the list. That’s how much I love Louisiana.

Well if you’ve never heard of Cheramie then you don’t much about a place that you claim to love.
