I'm valuable and I don't think I'll be fired, but the serious talk will be serious. Just nervous about where to take it.

Man up and meet him in person now.
Firing you is a pain in the arse for him. You may save your job.
It will still be a relationship when you leave, except that it will be your present boss telling your next job prospect how bad you suck.
Fix this shite. Now. And GTFO of the OT and bust your arse until you do. That is all. Good luck.

Is this "serious talk" taking place in your bosses office around 4:30 pm today?

You do get that "valuable" people don't say that, right?
Also, valuable people get fired all the time. As a boss, let me tell you that your skills ain't shite if you don't do the job I've laid out for you.

I'll see him next week. I do bust my arse, that's where the frustration comes from.

I'm frustrated with the lack of support in my job. Maybe we can switch.

Set a game plan for the talk.
List out your shortcomings/performance issues and WHY you think those exist. Also lay out what you feel to be the best course of action to take to correct the issues. Then ask his/her opinion. Explain before they chime in that you are trying to become a more efficient and productive member of the team so you asked for this talk to ensure that happens.

Not going to be a good meeting for you if this is the approach you take.

Just apologize and say you lost your temper. Just say you want to meet his expectations and sometimes its not always clear what they are.
