I've fired hard workers. That may not be the issue.
The strongest ox aint helping the farmer if he pulls sideways. Are you working on the right things?
You may be, and your boss may be a dick. If so, look for another job while you have one. In the meantime, work this shite out with your boss.

So, you don't know what you're supposed to do. How long have you been there?

That does seem whiny.

Nah, we got a whole batch of summer interns doing that shite

If you do decide you don't want to have the serious discussion, just admit you were frustrated and lashed out. You can apologize and carry on. Everybody gets frustrated/overwhelmed.
I'm valuable and I don't think I'll be fired, but the serious talk will be serious. Just nervous about where to take it.

Sack up and apologize if you did indeed step out of line. Or.....
go with your plan of sticking to your guns and get another gig. If you believe in your talents and experience like you claim you do, you shouldn't have any issue finding a suitable alternative. Good luck.

Man up and meet him in person now.
Firing you is a pain in the arse for him. You may save your job.
It will still be a relationship when you leave, except that it will be your present boss telling your next job prospect how bad you suck.
Fix this shite. Now. And GTFO of the OT and bust your arse until you do. That is all. Good luck.
This old fricker gets it.

Lots of caveats here...
IF you are doing what you are supposed to be doing and doing it well (documented) and...
IF you haven't had any discipline issues (especially any documented) and...
IF your boss is a known frick-up or is demonstrably wrong about this and...
IF your boss isn't the owner and...
IF your boss's boss isn't your boss's friend and...
IF your boss's boss isn't a complete tool...
THEN go over his head. Bring all of your documentation that backs up your claims and leave your frustration and emotions at the door.
Otherwise get ready to either back down and be his bitch or get your resume ready.

Why are you and your boss texting back and forth about your performance. Those conversations should be face to face. That's just dumb of both of you.

List out your shortcomings/performance issues and WHY you think those exist. Also lay out what you feel to be the best course of action to take to correct the issues. Then ask his/her opinion. Explain before they chime in that you are trying to become a more efficient and productive member of the team so you asked for this talk to ensure that happens.
sounds good
emphasize the words efficiency and communication to detract from the appearance of laziness or inattentiveness
