The mere fact that they are wanted for a violent crime isn't sufficient for this.
If the police feel there is imminent danger to them or the public, they absolutely can.

This is true, but that feeling must be reasonable. Simply being wanted for a violent crime is not sufficient. This is long established jurisprudence to my knowledge.

But he didn't! He wasn't wanted for a violent crime...traffic and drug charges.

What do we know about this case that makes us assume it wasn't?
Absolutely nothing. I never said it wasn't.
I think the police should have released the video and their side of the story before the family gets to view it and set their own narrative.

This is usually hard to prove if he's driving away. The only way I can see them doing that is if the guy was in the process of using the vehicle as a weapon...also hard to prove. I mean, outside of some scenario that involves him shooting up a place and being in the process of driving away, I don't see how this turns out well for the cops. Still, I withhold judgment until the video and details are released.

Maybe parents should teach their kids to obey laws.

Has anyone seen the video yet?
I’m confused as to why we are freaking out. Mykia Bryant apparently “called the cops and was defending herself” before we saw the video.
Maybe we should withhold judgement

But just running from them? No, you can't shoot him.
Attempting to apply the rules civilian has to follow to police is just a demonstration of ignorance on your part. LEO's are in fact able to justify shooting a suspect in such cases if there is reason to assume the suspect would continue to pose a threat to the public.

If they shot him in the back, that's a problem.

Family viewing of the bodycam footage has been delayed:

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WTVD) -- Delays are frustrating activists, attorneys and the family of a man reportedly shot in the back by a North Carolina deputy.
The family of Andrew Brown Jr. expected to be allowed at 11:30 a.m. Monday to watch bodycam video from the incident that happened April 21 in Elizabeth City. However, delays have indefinitely pushed back when the family will be allowed to see the video.
Attorneys for the family said they arrived at 11:30 a.m. to find the doors to Pasquotank County Sheriff's Office locked. An email to the family's attorney informed them the sheriff's office was working to redact some of the video.
The family's attorneys said they were promised by officials that they would be allowed to see the raw video.
The Pasquotank County Attorney R. Michael Cox released the following statement around noon:
"We're glad that state law allows us to provide a private viewing of the body camera footage to the family of Mr. Brown and after we received their request on Sunday evening, we began working immediately to make that happen as soon as possible. The law also allows us to blur some faces on the video and that process takes time Pursuant to N.C. Gen. Stat. Section 132-1.4A, this may be done when necessary to protect an active internal investigation. As soon as these redactions are complete, we will allow the family to view this footage. We hope this occurs today, but the actual time will be driven by the completion of the redactions. We are also continuing to seek transparency within the law and continue our efforts to get a court order that would allow the video to be released to the public."

Depends on the crime he's wanted for. They can shoot you for fleeing if you have a violent crime that you are wanted for.
Can you cite this, without referencing your arse you clearly pulled this out of?

dude jumped in his car and the cops shot him as he drove away in NC
According to who?
He was late for work and his racist white boss said if he was late ever he would be fired.

Good idea. I wish we'd all do that....

I'll wait for the video ultimately. But unless he was driving the car in the direction of a cop, I don't see how the shooting will be justified. You can't just shoot a guy because you don't feel like chasing him.

Always keep your back to the police, even in th act of killing someone.

To control the situation in case of life threatening development happening?
What control do you have if they know you can't fire the gun? If I'm a thug and I know this all I have to do is casually leave without threatening anyone else and then the cops can't do shite?
