Today is the 75th anniversary of the last "line battle" in naval history

During the Battle of Leyte Gulf (October 23-26, 1944), in the action centered around Surigao Strait, the U.S. and Japanese forces came within sight of each other and opened fire.
This was the last exchange of gunfire between opposing battleships, the last line battle, as well as the last time an opposing force "crossed the T" of another force. The United States won this action decisively, sinking the vaunted Japanese super battleship Yamashiro in the process.
The USS West Virginia fires on the Japanese fleet (October 25, 1944)

back to back world war champions!
A good friend of mine was on the USS Enterprise at the Battle of Leyte Gulf. He would always talk about the war and had a kind voice but you could tell that he was a bad arse in his day. After WWII he joined the army and was in the Korean war.

Also the battle where some of the old surviving battleships from pearl got their vengeance.
Strangely enough, none of the iowa class took part.

That's because the US fleet that took part in this attack was a diversionary force
Halsey had the Iowas in the main force far North of the engagement

The crew of Zuikaku salute as the flag is lowered on the listing carrier after an airstrike. She was the last carrier participating in the attack on Pearl Harbor to be sunk.

Lots of iron in a small place.

Was this the battle where Nimitz humiliated Halsey by saying “the world wonders” where he is?
Was Halsey the JEB Stuart of WW2? US Navy won anyway, so he was off the hook. If we had lost, he would have gone down in infamy.
If that’s the same battle I’m thinking of when Nimitz sent that cable.

Good post and good to remember, but
Yamashiro was sunk in that action, but it was not a super-battleship; those were Yamato and Musashi. The U.S. Navy did sink the Musashi during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, but in a separate action, and it was sunk by airplane-dropped torpedoes and bombs.

This is an incredible photo. More impressive is that it even survived.

My FIL was on the USS Mississippi. It has the distinction of being the last battleship to fire its main armament at another battleship in this battle.

Halsey took the bait and took the 3rd Fleet (the entire flank guard for the Leyte landing vessels in San Bernardino Strait) north with him chasing a decoy fleet.
Thankfully, an idiot stood on the bridge of Japanese super-Battleship Yamato. Admiral Kurita...
Leyte was a resounding strategic success for the Pacific fleet, but a tactical embarrassment for the Bull.

if he's still living and still able you should try to get him to relay some of his recollections on video, we're almost out of those heroes
