So all you gotta do is find a way to prevent a million coonasses from provoking them.

They would have also added some authenticity to the Tarzan movies filmed around Morgan City.

but how exactly does a hermit come in contact with another human who just happens to have a stolen baby hippo for sale?

Hippos are very territorial and the only "provocation' needed is a human wanting to use the river/ swamp where a hippo happens to be present.

So I just read the entire article. It was fascinating and intriguing and I enjoyed it very much. Right up until the end. Was this whole article just an excuse to shite on Confined Animal Feeding Operations? These dirty fricking hippies love eating vegan and farm to table and free range and whatever the frick the next fad is but then decry the starvation happening in subsistence farming Africa, South America, and Southeast Asia. Guess what hippy cock holsters, without industrialized farming and livestock from the good ole U. S. of A. Billions would die. Get off your high horse and quit believing free range chickens (not natturalnto chickens) are going to solve the over populated worlds problems

Totally agree. It's surprising to me we've never really seen that story "told" outside of the Atavist story. It has every element of an incredible story.

In 2017 Sarah Gailey made her debut with River of Teeth and Taste of Marrow, two action-packed novellas that introduced readers to an alternate America in which hippos rule the colossal swamp that was once the Mississippi River. Now readers have the chance to own both novellas in American Hippo, a single, beautiful volume.

Years ago, in an America that never was, the United States government introduced herds of hippos to the marshlands of Louisiana to be bred and slaughtered as an alternative meat source. This plan failed to take into account some key facts about hippos: they are savage, they are fast, and their jaws can snap a man in two.

By the 1890s, the vast bayou that was once America's greatest waterway belongs to feral hippos, and Winslow Houndstooth has been contracted to take it back. To do so, he will gather a crew of the damnedest cons, outlaws, and assassins to ever ride a hippo. American Hippo is the story of their fortunes, their failures, and his revenge.
