Some of our friends just did leathered granite and it looks AMAZING.
If we ever redo our kitchen, that's what we're going with.
And whoever suggested slate - hell no! We had slate counters in our master bath and I HATED them. They would stain and chip and flake - slate is the worst.

Granite, good cost effective material. If you ever sell it is a selling point.

Then it either wasn't slate, or it wasn't installed correctly...

Unlike granite, marble and concrete, slate is non-porous. This means that it cleans up very easily and does not have a tendency to harbor bacteria. It won’t absorb liquids, so you won’t get any staining from juice, tomato products, oil, cleaners, etc., since they can’t penetrate the surface.
The hardness and durability of slate is also very appealing in the kitchen or bathroom. It won’t easily chip or scratch, and it stands up very well to heat. Hot pans or hair tools won’t mar the surface. Finally, slate countertops are quite a bit more affordable than their pricier cousins like granite and marble. They cost less than most concrete, quartz or crushed glass countertops too. Slate countertop prices are $50-$65 per square foot.
Corners can be slightly brittle and they are sharp. Many professional installers recommend having the corners rounded off to avoid cracks or injuries.
Love mine. Would show pics, but the better half has drawn lines about what I can post on here.

I'm a fan of concrete because of the customization that's possible:

Saw someone putting in Cre8stone on a bar remodel. I've checked the website and plan to find out more about this when I do an outdoor kitchen. Has anyone tried this stuff?

Granite is slightly radioactive

We will be doing ours soon too. Looking at anything other than granite. Seems every fricking house I go in has granite countertops. We are considering wood, concrete, or quartz.
I redid a hall half bath and put in a copper vanity top. I really like it, but copper kitchen countertops would be expensive. Here's the company I used and installed it myself.

This is inaccurate considering I had an entire bottle of red wine shatter a week after I moved into the new house. No stains at all
Right because I'm sure you cleaned it up within a couple minutes that's why

quote:Gorgeous stuff. Pricier than our choice, which is Fantasy Brown quartzite, but I have no regrets. I love ours. Island is walnut.
We chose a very clean/white slab of taj mahal.
