Watch this documentary. It will teach you all you need to know about subs.

Having said that, is there a chance these guys are sitting on the bottom of the ocean and the sub could still just implode at any moment? Or do they hit the bottom and they’re just sitting there forever?

It is technically possible. However, the WAY more likely (and humane) scenario is that they had a catastrophic failure and were dead and liquified before they could even register anything was happening.

I don't know if it's been discussed in here, but there was a catastrophic failure involving a diving bell and deep water divers years back. They believe the hatch wasn't closed all the way when 2 of them left the deep water pressure chamber to go to the surface. 3 of the divers in the pressure chamber literally exploded into gelatinous blobs. The one closest to the hatch was subjected to such immense pressure that his organs and spinal column were sucked out of his body.

It sounds like some sort of make believe Hollywood movie crap. It's absolutely horrifying/fascinating.

Yes the Byford Dolphin was mentioned before and we’ve tried to move past it. Thanks for reminding us.

The Byford Dolphin accident. I mentioned it a while back in the thread. I told a guy to Google it and was sure to put a NSFA(nywhere) tag on it.

Ha, nosing around on YouTube looking for stuff on James Cameron's sub, I just found out that NatGeo has their "Shark Fest" livestreaming.

Maybe they are being kind and know what happened? "

How is that being kind?

Long time gap before they contacted USCG. That wasn't smart.

I googled it and didnt see anything really NSFA. Its a terrible story if thats what you were getting at but its not like there was a video or images of the bodies...

Guess I missed something.

They almost surely imploded and nothing is left except that damn PlayStation controller, which is nearly indestructible. However, if they are still alive there's literally no possibility rescuers could get on site and engineer a solution for raising it in the few hours left. Give them a month, and good weather, and they could probably do it.

If it imploded, why are there reports of banging sounds every 30 minutes being heard for at least a few hours on Monday?

There's plenty of scrap metal down there to be banging around in the current. Or maybe it's some weird oceanic anomaly and the sound is hundreds of miles away. Or it could be the sub, but if it is they're dead men floating. Nothing anybody can do to help them.

It seems the banging is being detected by sonobuoys - wouldn't that imply the sound is closer to the surface and not coming from the bottom?

I'd like to think they just met the aliens from The Abyss and been chillin' in their underwater city. N-O-T D-E-A-D

I think the Navy knows exactly what happened and when, but revealing it would compromise the secrets of its undersea surveillance systems.

Here’s a video about the abc reporter who almost got permanently stuck down there on a Russian submersible:
