What is the penalty? Just confiscation?

No one has suggested smuggling it like heroin... fill a condom with the alcohol, tie a knot in it and swallow it. Poop it out once you are on the boat.

I was gonna say to butt chug a bunch of vodka and as soon as you get on board take a big ol dump into a trash bag.

Yes. If it's in your checked bag, you'll get a letter in your bags stating they found "unauthorized items" in your bag. If it's in it's original sealed container, you can pick it up on the day you get back.

If it's in your carry on bags, you'll lose it completely.

They still let you on board and nothing else will happen. No penalties and no fines.

That basically makes it a fun game...

If you are looking for a cheap way to get alcohol when you are already on the ship, we were able to order a fifth of Crown for around $50, I think. So compared to the 6-8 dollars it would cost you for a Crown drink we had a whole handle delivered to our room via room service. This was a couple of years ago, so I am not sure about the prices now, but it saved us some money at the time.

I literally put a fifth of Crown wrapped in a towel in my bag on all three Carnival Cruises I've been on and never had it taken.

This is correct. In January I bought some scotch in Cozumel and they made me check it when we got back to port.

They check pretty hard now for liquids. All liquids in check bags will get flagged and pulled aside. All liquids in carry on now get looked at and opened and shaken and checked.

really best place now is to carry it on your person. Non metal.

Or just cruise with Disney.

FWIW just took my first Carnival cruise in 4 years and even though many people consider me an advocate for them they have really fallen hard since the Triumph incident. I have likely taken my last cruise with them. Too many cut backs and short staff.

Not necessarily, see my post above. Although I may have just been lucky each time

I used to basically take a 12 pack of disani water and open 2 bottles and fill with rum and vodka. Then seal the bottles and seal the box. They let you bring a 12 pack of water or soda but now they will open the box and go through it pretty hard. Not worth it anymore.

You can pay 50 dollars a day and booze is included now. I don't do a lot of heavy drinking on cruises anymore but that's pretty cheap.

The only cruise that I went on for high school graduation, our chaperone told us that if we were bringing liqueur with us, make sure that the caps are plastic. They supposedly run the bags through a metal detector but not really an xray due to volume of bags.

It's not about being able to afford it. It is about choosing not to pay the ridiculously inflated prices they charge for drinks.

Then why go on the cruise in the first place?

They can scan for liquids now. That seems to have started at least out of NOLA about 2.5 years ago. I was on a RCCL ship out of NOLA then and had to go to the belly of the ship the first night to find my luggage (I didn't have alcohol my luggage was just lost) but they had hundreds of people that had their bags flagged and had to open them for security and show them the liquids that caused the liquid scan hit. I had talked to one of the security guys down there and he said it was some new equipment they got in to do that. Not sure if its random or every bag though.

I don't get the notion that the drinks are inflated. Drinks were 7.50-8 dollars for large heavy poured drinks on the cruise I just got off of. How much is everyone paying for these drinks at the local bar? A simple mixed drink like Gin and Tonic with Bombay Sapphire in a tall double glass was 6.50.

Do they sneak a bottle of booze into the club too?

The prices are not the issue.. Its the ability to have self control and not run up a 600 bar tab. But they fixed that by letting you spend 50 per day and drink till your liver falls off.

Not true. Mine was flagged for orange and grape juice bottles

I got a nice note apologizing for them going through my bag

That's the thing, you're drinking for 16-18 hours a day for 5-7 days straight. Do the math

I liked the specialty drinks in the cute cups. No way I'd pay $10 every hour
