I just fix them a plate at the free continental breakfast and take it to them

If you have to tip to get an upgrade your obviously not a true road warrior...doing 125 plus nights a year on the road for 30yrs.
You don't even have to ask for an upgrade it's automatic.
Tipping at check in is only for the luggage guys if you use them.or the valet if you need an errand run. Not the FrontDesk Person.

That right there is how the top of the food chain gets murdered in cold blood and half the population doesn’t give a shite.

That’s a decade of sleeping in hotels. Was it worth it?

My son has to see a specialist that’s a couple hours away from our home so we stay at the same 5 star hotel every 2-3 months usually only 1-2 nights and always have my family. My son is 4 years old with a huge personality so everyone recognized us after the first few stays. I pass out 20’s like they’re breath mints in that place. Typically we get an upgrade to a killer suite, and the entire staff treats my wife and kids like royalty.
If you stay at the same place frequently, it’s worth it.

This seems like a good place to ask this. I go into my local brewery, pull some beer out of the take away fridge, take it the bar and pay. I used to leave a tip but now leave zero. Cool or dick move?

Wasting money is how you end up with nothing but IOUs.

What in the actual frick.
Bell hops, delivery folks in hotels get wonderful tips from me.
Sandestin once around 30 years ago at 10:00 pm one Summer night AFTER TWICE confirming that DAY and telling them I was going to be arriving at that time.
I used the vaudeville joke finally after they threatened to call the law.
“I see you’re wearing a cross. Are you by any chance a Catholic?”
“Yessir, I am.”
“Well if John Paul II showed up here tonight, I’ll bet you’d find a room for him. Well, he ain’t comin’ here tonight so I’ll take THAT room.”

Chicken or the egg first.
Do you tip then request the upgrade or do you wait for the upgrade then tip?
So much protocol.

Honey, I thought the hotel room was only $160, why did we spend $500??
Sweetie, you forgot to add sales tax, entertainment tax, city tax, daily resort fee, parking fee, housekeeping fee and the tips for the bell hop, concierge, and front desk person!

It’s time to call tipping what it is - a non-deductible donation to our business model.
I really hope the no tax on tips talk was campaign trail garbage because giving preferential tax treatment to certain income/benefits leads to terrible long term consequences.
The entire reason your HR department and boss sits between you and your doctor is because employer provided benefits were a mechanism to skirt WWII era wage controls.

Yes, some years when i was younger it was leave on Sunday home on Thur or FRI. I have done it all around the world and every state in the US. Is it always fun no but that's why it's called work.
When your young, single and the company pays for it, DO IT. Stack up the points & Miles, enjoy the experience, meet alot of interesting people and learn a little about the local area.
Don't have to pay for hotels or airline flights when I go on vacations.

The more out of hand it gets, the more comfortable I get smacking that NO TIP button across just about all settings...so keep it up

I’ve never tipped for an upgrade but that’s about the only thing I’d consider tipping for just to check in.
I’ve never done this but it used to be common in Las Vegas. You’d slide a stack with your credit card, ID, and cash (amount depended on the property) to the desk clerk in what they called a “sandwich” and ask about available upgrades. It was more of a bribe than a tip and was done in a way where the cash was hard to see.
