1976. The Freedom Train or whatever it was rolled into town. Everything was Red, White and Blue. Pabst Blue Ribbon & Evel Knievel. Elvis was alive. Schwinn bikes were made in Chicago.

9/11 for sure. And everytime I see the Blue Angels.

Movie wise Saving Private Ryan and
U-571 ( for some reason) make me proud.

Also Letters from home is a great song that helps you appreciate our service members past and present.

I’m proud to be an American no matter what.

After spending 6 weeks in Vietnam and when going thru customs the Customs officer said “welcome to the USA”. I wanted to kneel and kiss the ground, so thankful to be back home!

July 4, 1976, never saw as many people shooting off fireworks in the neighborhood, almost every single family. The bicentennial celebration that year was something to behold.

1980, USA Hockey Team defeating Russia then winning the Gold Medal.

Later that same year when Reagan won the POTUS election.

1989, Berlin Wall falling.

2016, Trump winning the POTUS election.

I grew up in a town surveyed by a very young George Washington and with lots of Civil War battlefields nearby. Visits to the homes of the early Presidents happened, and to Jamestown and Williamsburg.
As I aged, the import of all those meant more.

One of many visits to Montpelier this one on a cold winter's day gave more of a feeling of how brilliant Jefferson was, and then to read his garden journal (which now belongs to the Massachusetts Garden Society and is on line) gave a feeling of history.
Then an off season visit to the Smithsonian to the portrait gallery and the room that houses the portraits from life of the first five presidents. That painter painted all five of them and they were the reason we are.

Visits mid weed in low tourist season are recommended because tourists aren't a positive addition to experiences.

I hear this live 6 times a year. I know it's a Bulldog fight song, but to me, it will always be the "Battle Hymn of the Republic". Patriotic and religious.

I was so disturbed after 9/11, I ran a 5K with a flag race in 2001. And I didn't run. Everyone had flags, some were crying, but everyone was one that day. All races, ages, etc. It was a beautiful race.

In 1970, 17 yrs. old while still in my senior year of high school. I had one cousin in the Navy, one in the Air Force and one flying choppers for the Army in Nam.

I signed up early enlistment while still in school to head to Orlando for Navy Boot Camp and left just 1 week after graduating.

I had no plans of going to college so the Draft and Army were likely in my future, so I chose the Navy. I'd better my chances on the water than the jungles in Nam.

On 9/11 and the days that followed. Perhaps the last time we ever see this country "together". If we'd only known we were being hoodwinked into allowing our freedoms to be impeached due to the Patriot act
