I think you meant 93.

in 2003... yes. Tigerland and Sharlo were great.
Well, except for the serial killer in the area.
As someone who lived there slightly before that time period I'd say it was definitely better than it is now. Probably significantly (walked home from the bars many times without concern). But I wouldn't call it "great". It was in the early/mid stages of becoming a full blown slum.

Is Tigerland and the area across Nicholson from it considered generally safe?
Take a drive through there and you'll answer your own question in about 30 seconds.

Let’s just say that 99% of the people that live there now have no idea who Bob Pettit or Alvin Dark were.
To be fair, I'd say 99% of the people in BR under the age of 50 or so as a whole don't know who either of those men are. Dark died 11 years ago and last managed a MLB game nearly 50 years ago. Petit is 92 years old and last played in the NBA in 1965.

It was very safe when I lived there from 1980 - 1983.
That's when I lived there too. The most dangerous thing was me trying to drive a whole 4 blocks to the back of Tigerland from the bars up front. The apartments were mostly kind of shitty but it was worth living there for the bars and the roast beef poboys at Pump-n-station.

It’s where the Army sent soldiers to train before going to Vietnam for reference

True, but the point was if it was filled with LSU students as it was back in the day, at least these kids would’ve probably heard those names before besides them being on street signs.

Late 80's was my day. Was incredible and most had no idea or care who those guys were. Drinks were cheap and basically zero crime except for the occasional refrigerator raid on your buddies.

It's the Carnival Cruise line of LSU

unfortunately today it's very true...Spring Semester 74 was a fun time to live there, we had the London Transit bus that dropped us off at the Journalism Building, and I found the laundromat with a wash and fold option (made my life REALLY good)

I’ve never felt afraid in that area or the Bottoms for that matter…

It's basically all section 8 housing now. I lived there in the 90s for a few years and it was fine at that time.

I didn’t even have to drive to the bars. I could walk to them.
Posted on 7/10/25 at 5:54 pm to geauxpurple
they need to be bought up, torn down, and developed

Sharlo yes
A lot of the Tigerland apartments had already turned really bad by then though

Lived there from 90-94. Used to walk around with a 5th and some joints to go “looking for a party” at 2 am after bars closed. Would definitely be in trouble if i did that now.

Yeah, but what was Alvin's nickname.......
Posted on 7/11/25 at 9:55 am to BDPops85
I lived on Alvin Dark from 2000-2002, a couple of buildings behind Fred’s. It was already getting sketchy at that point (especially the crumbling 3 story apartments right next to Corey’s). I’ll never forget on the night of 9/11, the apartment under mine got broken into and robbed.

n the mid to late 80's I lived on Brighside View and it was the place to be as a LSU student.
Now, I wouldn't live there for free. So, the answer is NO, it is not safe.
I lived on S Brightside View for a year in 2015, never had a single issue. We had a knocker at 3AM once, but other than that no problems. Has it gone downhill that fast since?

It was safer when wavin Willie was still with us.
AKA Sharlo Joe. Used to make my day when I'd see him. Dude was passionate about waving, that's for sure.
