Tickets are given for no seatbelt, so why not when a biker doesn’t wear a helmet?

Seems like an inconsistency to me...I always have on a seatbelt anyway but I feel like the equivalent for a motorcycle is to be wearing a helmet. How is it not a law to have to wear a helmet?

Why don’t motorcycle riders get tickets for not wearing seatbelts?

It’s never actually been about safety

Yeah the helmet is really going to help when you come flying off the bike at 75 mph

I personally wish they would remove the seatbelt law in LA. In addition allow insurance companies and defendants in vehicle accident suits to not pay for damages caused by not wearing a seat belt.

I personally wish government would quit trying to play the role of mommy in our lives.

I don't really care if a biker doesn't wear a helmet, as it cannot effect me in anyway.
There is a slight potential for someone driving a vehicle to get thrown out of and/or bounced around in their seat if they lose control of their vehicle. That could cause a bad situation to become worse if they cannot regain control of a vehicle because they're not in their seat. A seat belt is a safety device, but it also serves a dual purpose as a control device. A helmet is simply a safety device. You could argue, however, that a helmet with a shield serves as more than just safety. If a bug, or object, hits someone in the face.......

I am fundamentally opposed to seat belt laws.

And I religiously put on my seat belt in vehicles.

Nothing like wearing a Helmet on a hot July Day, while riding down HWY 1 in Mississippi... Nothing but freshly plowed bean fields on each side of you and no traffic...

But make me wear that helmet... LAst thing I need is to get pulled over in a Miss town with a population of 3...

Seat belt laws save money for insurance. If it wasn’t a law and enforced, far less people would wear them and far more would be hurt more in accidents thus driving up the cost of insurance. People that don’t wear seatbelts don’t give a damn about insurance and liability generally, do not being covered by insurance in an accident is not going to motivate them to see them.

Yes, insurance, for which we all pay.

Also, uninsured/underinsured accident victims' medical bills are paid by us - plus rehab, long-term care, disability etc

It's economic.

You might lose a limb, but the helmet will probably save your life.

No law requiring a helmet in Texas. There is a law requiring a Helmet in Louisiana. So there's the reason you aren't seeing tickets if you live in TX.

Reason there are seatbelt laws everywhere is due to the shear number of people driving and the statistics that show it does good. Therefore keeping everyone's insurance a little lower. Plus, I don't like to ride with other people who don't wear their seatbelt. My dad always forgets to put his on. Especially with my son in the vehicle I will force it. 200 lb man flying around in the cab of a vehicle can do damage to the others in there who are properly buckled in.

On the helmet side of things, I've had helmets save my life once and prevent serious injury a second, so the argument that it doesn't matter is stupid.
