Next time you are at Yellowstone, note all the stories about the people who have jumped into scalding water after their dogs. I know you love your dog. I love mine. But at the end of the day, it’s an animal.

Found it on Google Earth. 300 block of New Trail near Elgin.
Cistern on Google Earth

Better article. The guy in the news report has that place in the middle of the green field. Also the hole isn’t small. It’s about 4 feet wide. Covered with dirt now.

More about the recovery from Sheriff.
quote:

The fumes, the stagnant water, and the instability of the cistern hampered recovery efforts and prevented First Responders from initially climbing into the man-made structure. A decision was made to ventilate the cistern by removing the hydrogen sulfide gas and then removing the water. Still, the integrity of the structure was in question. Efforts were made to dig beside the structure to allow access from the side at a level near where the 3 bodies had been located, but these efforts were soon abandoned since breaching the side would weaken the walls and make entry unsafe. After the fumes and water were removed from the cistern, and the air was stabilized, a small drone was deployed inside the cistern to check the integrity of the walls.

It was decided to lower someone into the cistern to make the recovery. Investigator D. Newman, with the Sheriff’s Office volunteered for the assignment. With the support of the Elgin Fire Department and the City of Elgin Utility crews, the Investigator was successfully lowered into the hole, recovering all 3 victims and the dog. The recovery effort was completed at approximately 7:30 PM.

Investigation of the events that led up to the individuals being in the cistern is ongoing in order to confirm the reporting of the initial details. An autopsy was ordered and the bodies were taken to the medical examiner’s office by a local funeral home. The funeral home also took the dog.

What was the plan here?

The article says they would all be getting autopsies, I don't know if that's standard procedure in a drowning case.

Perhaps they died because of a lack of oxygen due to a heavy gas, like CO2.

ETA: NVM. I see that there was H2S

The man was then trapped in the cistern, where the water level was about eight feet below the ground, according to Cook. The BCSO later learned that the water contained hydrogen sulfite gas. Two other people from the hunting party, a man and a woman, then also jumped in the cistern, "possibly to rescue the first person,"

So what the frick did the other two think they were gonna do to help?!

It was after midnight, pitch black and the dog escapes into a corn field. Apparently they had a tracking device for the dog which helps explain one big mystery for me. The other was how does the dog just so happen to find that hole in that huge field much less fall in after? I’m thinking he got a whiff of that incredible funk and made a beeline right for it. Then just ran right into it? Crazy.

Depending on concentration of exposure to H2S it actually could have been very fast. You could go unconscious within about two breaths depending on the level of exposure. If it is lower it can cause some irritations to eyes, nose, and throat, upset stomach, convulsions, etc. For their sake I hope it was the higher levels.

I have a question. How do a couple of people from Florida decide to randomly drive to that part of Texas to look for hogs?
