Three people have been killed after dry ice was poured into a swimming pool during a birthday party in Moscow.

The victims had been celebrating the 29th birthday of Instagram influencer Yekaterina Didenko at a pool complex in the Russian capital.

About 25kg of dry ice was tipped into the pool with the intention of creating a “visual effect” to impress guests.

But people inside the pool reportedly instantly began to choke and lose consciousness.

Several people were injured during the stunt, including Ms Didenko’s husband, 32-year-old Valentin Didenko, who is reportedly among the dead.

I’m thinking that’s not the effect they were after.

Interesting tidbit from article...

Ms Didenko is a qualified pharmacist

I have a really hard time believing that a pharmacist (who would have had to have taken numerous chemistry classes in their studies) would not know what happens when you throw dry ice into water.

Remember, this occurred in Russia. I'd question whether a pharmacist in Russia has the same training as those in the United States.

I didn't know that. Then again, someone usually holds my hand any time science or mathematics are discussed.

This is even dumber than I first thought. This is in a tiny enclosed indoor pool.

This reminds me of the Lake Nyos disaster.

https://www.slate.com/blogs/atlas_obscura/2013/07/26/lake_nyos_killed_1746_when_it_released_a_huge_pocket_of_co2.html

quote:

"The lake literally exploded in what's known as a limnic eruption, sending a fountain of water over 300 feet into the air and creating a small tsunami. Hundreds of thousands of tons of carbon dioxide burst forth at 60 miles an hour, suffocating people up to 15 miles away. Of the 800 residents of nearby Nyos, six survived. In all, 1,746 people died and more than 3,500 livestock perished in a matter of minutes."

Dumbass.

Proper way to use dry ice is put it in a 2 liter plastic bottle with water, seal it, shake it, and run away.
