I think that I don't give a shite.

If I know anyone that's a strong "happy holidays" person then I'll be sure to wish them a "merry Christmas" though.

Christmas celebrates a special and specific event. To remove reference to that specific origin is like telling someone Happy Thursday on Thanksgiving !

What bothers me is when they say Holiday lights, holiday tree, holiday card and winter break. That's trying to take the word Christmas out of things. If people get offended at the word Christmas, go live in a Muslim country

But there were already festivals and celebrations of the Winter Solstice on the same day. The christian clergy just co-opted the day in order to reach the poor, illiterate masses.....and it worked.

Thoughts on the Christmas vs Happy Holidays argument?

This wasn't an issue 30+ years ago. They say happy holidays but they know very well what holiday they are talking about.

This holiday only exists on this day and has a lot of its traditions because of holidays that existed before it in the same timeframe.

So really Christians waged a war on other holidays and now bitching about other people doing the same to them.

frick a duck and Happy Saturnalia

I don't care, as long as someone doesn't try to "correct" me. I'm definitely not offended if someone tells me "Happy Holidays".

I don't care which one is said to me, but I do think it's dumb that people actually get offended if someone tells them "Merry Christmas"

I probably say Happy Holidays in professional settings some, but mostly I say Merry Christmas, and I do so liberally

Nobody has ever responded poorly in the entirety of my life

I'm guessing you could probably say Merry Christmas to like 90% of Jews or anyone else and they'd just smile or say it back. It's so overblown.

If a Jew wishes me a good fast or something I'll be confused but I'm not going to start yelling at them or anything

Early man would notice that as the year progressed, the amount of daylight would dwindle. This scared the shite out of them. Then (a few days after the winter solstice) the days started getting longer.

This made them joyous and they celebrated it. This celebration was handed down through the generations and it became a sun festival for the pagans.

Christmas originated to celebrate the birth of Christ. Since there was already a party going on by the pagans, Christians chose December 25th to celebrate Christ's birth since everybody already had the day off and such.

Yeah, it's called Christmas because it's named after Christ. I won't argue that fact. As others have pointed out, though, the timing of the holiday was not derived from Christians.

Also, I'm curious how many people you run into that argue why it's called Christmas. That seems strange.

The war on Christmas is a baptist strawman.

Marketers say happy holidays because they want to cast a wide net that isnt an attack in Christianity. For some reason the good southern baptist folks really get stirred up by that

I am in outside sales and when I pop into office merry Christmas is almost always said to me. Maybe because I am honky but still

It’s the same.
When people want to leave out Christ and say “Happy Holidays,” they’re including Him. They’re acknowledging it is in fact a “Holy Day.”

It doesn’t really matter to me which one is said. I have a problem with being told what to say and how to feel.
