I've owned a few motorcycles since the 70s. Rode a many of miles until I messed my back up a few years back.
Just like Gumbo stated, never take riding for granted or your surroundings.
I always looked at it like riding a Bull.
shite can go South in a heartbeat and it's just a matter of time before it does.
Riding these days compared to 30 years ago is like Russian roulette.

Yes, bikes are great fun and worth the risk. Start on dirt. Work your way up to street riding. Big thing is skill and staying visible on the street. Don’t just settle for a garbage MSF class, take classes like total control.

buy a Harley . there are plenty of less expensive used ones that only sat in the garage after the yuppie bought it.

its the left turning car folk that take out the large majority of mc accidents

stay out of freeway traffic. country roads are worth it

go to the republic of Texas motor cycle rally . three days of bikes boobs and beer

Used Harleys, garage kept, mint condition with under 1000 miles grow on trees here in ORL. Some CPAs or DDSs get them ride them to Daytona once or twice and then just park them. After 5 years they are dumping them on craigslist for about 25% what they paid OTD. It's like going to an animal shelter, 70% of the dogs there are 5 month old Pitbulls.

I ride and its great but it's so much more dangerous out there in the last 15 years. On my commute literally 90% of the drivers out there are texting. All it takes is a tap from a car and you're in a wheelchair or in a coma.

Been riding since Milli Vanilli and love it but the texting driver thing is out of control. Before the iPhone came out it wasn't so bad. I've been off and on thinking of selling my bike for the past 3 years.

I'd say at this point it's borderline worth it. I think I'm holding out for autonomous cars to negate the distracted driver issue.

Going to a funeral for a motorcycle owner today. He didn't die of natural causes.

I had a Suzuki when I was younger. I loved it. Then some guy pulled out in front of me because he didn't see me. I just didn't have any time to react and I hit his side and flew over his hood and ended up like 15 feet down the road. Luckily I wasn't going terribly fast so I only had a broken arm, few broken ribs, and some bad scrapes. I got rid of my bike immediately.

My wife worked in a trauma unit. Half her patients were motorcycle riders.

Just in the past few months I have had four or five jackasses come within inches of running me over before I laid on the horn. Motorcycles don't have horns do they?

Got my first motorcycle in 1981 and I always thought I'd ride. Dreamed of getting the Harley at some point when I could afford it. After a couple of close calls, in college and right after, I pretty much quit riding on the street. Still have a small dual sport to hit the trails and occasional neighborhood lap.

No more dreams of Harleys, now I want to hit the TransAmerica Trail on a dual sport.

Known 2 people killed in motorcycle accidents. In one, a driver made a left directly in front of the biker on a highway. Biker, who was a very experienced rider, had the right of way, did not have any time to compensate, must have tried to slide the bike; it went under the vehicle. Driver of vehicle claimed he hadn't seen him.
Upshot: Driver charged, but walked away from the accident.
Biker dead at the scene, almost decapitated, arm and leg ripped from torso.
Dude was a very well-liked, minor local celebrity, won the Skipper role on Reality TV Gilligan's Island.
Story link Charlie Albert Gilligan show
Here is a link to his obit, I would never want anyone I cared about to ride a on a motorcycle. By accounts of first responders, the driver of the small truck that killed him genuinely had no idea there was a motorcycle in the oncoming lane.

Don't do it!!

My high school friend and roommate at LSU was killed in a motorcycle accident. He was 24 years old. That was 36 years ago and I still think about him all the time.

I ride this. I’ve ridden off and on all my life and I’ve seen people killed on motorcycles and I’ve laid one down myself. But I ride because I like it and have excelled at it. That said, I keep it in the country and now only ride early morning in the country. My days of riding in commuter traffic were done when texting was invented.

I know someone who was killed on a bike. Probably won't happen to you though. Go for it.

My Dad and one of my brothers got hit by a 18 wheeler in BR on I10. That was back in 1976. Only thing that saved them was a nurse saw it happen and stopped to help them. My Dad lost his left arm. My brother stayed in ICV for 4 months due to being ran over the truck. Bones broken all over.

Bad thing, the truck didn't even see nor stopped.

And an over/under of 3 people scraped off the pavement each event.
