My 09 4Runner sport 4x4 just turn 100k. I've taken it off-road a few times, in the snow a bunch, towed trailers full of furniture from NC thru the mountains to east TN, launched a couple of boats. I've changed the oil and the brake pads. The gas mileage sucks even on the interstate. I'll drive it til the wheels fall off.

My wife has a 2003 4Runner and we are trying to decide to get the new one or move over to the Highlander that has better gas mileage and a more comfortable ride. Or possibly look to another company.

Bought a '98 4Runner in late 2007 with ~155K miles on it. Paid the little note I took out with it off in early 2009 and that same week a fella with questionable citizenship status totaled it out by pulling out in front of me where River Road comes out on Highway 16 as you're heading into Denham Springs. Had ~209K miles on it at the time of the totaling.
Went and found a 2000 4Runner right after with about ~135K miles and have driven it ever since. It's burning some oil and probably has a year or two left of useful life. It's got 217K miles on it now.
Outside of the accident, I've had a tune-up done on both of them right after the purchase by my mechanic. I've changed an alternator, a battery, a driver's side rear tail-light and a passenger side headlight-total-in coming up on 8 year's worth of ownership of two automobiles that both had 130K+ miles.
FYI-To change the headlights and tail-lights required the following tools:
1 - Phillips Screwdriver.
I purchased both for less than $10K combined and have spent approximately $1K on them outside of tires and maintenance when necessary.
Without question some of the most dependable, reliable automobiles ever made.

This is us, we have 2003 as well. Bullet proof vehicle, but we are trying to decide if to get another 4Runner or a Highlander.

I was looking at the 2016 Honda Pilot Touring over the weekend for the wife and it is REALLY nice. If you like features in a car then this is the choice. For $40k you get an unbelievable amount of features.

Solid car with a IIHS Superior rating for front crashes (with optional equipment).
It will have all the bells and whistles she's used to, with quite few luxury features.

4Runner is 17/22. Highlander 20/25. All assumes no upgrades.
Find me a pilot that gets that without hypermiling techniques.
My buddy has one, he averages 17. I average the same or better in a 5000 lb 4x4 on 33s.
The lower number in hondas mpg range for that vehicle seems to be a bit closer.
They are quite comfortable to ride in, i just can't get past that mpg in a car based suv. Some people can.

For 40k, I'd buy a used Gx460 with more features and spend the rest on gas having something that's enjoyable to drive.

Dimensionally, yes. In every other category, no.
Better interior, better motor, better trans, better safety rating, better approach angle, better departure angle, better break over angle.
Honestly, I prefer the GX470 to the 460.
Spending 40k on a pilot is insanity.
