Fords and GMs are shite, and have been for years. Had one of each, and neither made it to 100,000 without major mechanical issues.
Hey now, the fullsize suvs only need alternators, belts, and brake calipers.
Still wouldn't buy one though.

lsupride is right. I am referring to the the offset crash, which is a very common type of crash.
Look, I don't hate on Pilots to make people made.
That "poor" rating, to me, is a really bad thing.
Just about everybody's vehicles get an least an "acceptable" here and most do "good".

We love our explorer Got so much bang for the buck too compared to the jap brands, but people will continue to pay 50% more for a little better reliability

Yeah, obviously didn't drive a pilot or any honda "suv".
Settled on the CRV. Different class entirely, but the pilot, as advertised (base model) at 18/25 is hardly a "gas guzzler" by most definitions.
4Runner is 17/22. Highlander 20/25. All assumes no upgrades.

I go by IIHS and the Pilot does mostly OK in most categories.
That said, I look for 5 starts or "excellent" ratings when buying or recommending vehicles for families or first-time drivers.

Pilot bombed in IIHS crash tests....so it's a non-starter. LINK
4Runner is awesome but the front end is hideous. I also disapprove of clear lens tail lights.
Highlander is a minivan, but likely a decent family car if you never tow or go off road.
TL;DR. Buy a Land Cruiser. If that's to expensive, buy a Tahoe.

Buy the 4Runner.
+1. The only real choice between those 3.

We bought ours 2 years ago so things could have changed a lot
We have around 45k miles on it and we've had no issues but I assume it should start imploding upon itself in the real near future based on others experiences

Damn son, click the link.
They've improved the rollover on them (roof strength), but they still do "Poor" on the offset.
I feel like it is on the design of the "A" pillar, but I'm not an engineer. The video doesn't look good, IMO.

For a woman, i like the highlander, better gas mileage. My wife commutes across pond so that matters a bit more for me.

In the case of the Ford Explorer, you get more than just "a little better" reliability from most other brands.

I'm sure you have excellent data to back that up
Buy what you want...that's what I did

Look, I'm not attacking you or whatever. I think I quoted you the other day, but I wasn't trying to offend you.
All I'm saying that this vehicle has had a weakness for many years that the manufacturer hasn't addressed. There are better choices out there fro a family, IMO. There may be other vehicles with a "Poor" rating in the offset, but in 2015, it's kinda rare. I wouldn't buy the either.

One is a true SUV. The other two are just the modern equivalents of the station wagon. Driving a Pilot or Highlander is like being a 21st Century Clark Griswold.
