it’s usually the bartenders themselves Nah but really it’s about shots. My bar keeps your shot glass in front of you to reuse so they don’t have to do more dishes. Whole line down the bar is regulars with their shot glass in front of them.

we had a group of old guys that came in for lunch every day, and sat at the bar and got hammered until the night crowd started trickling in. Every day.
Some of them worked at the shell station that shared the parking lot with the bar. They were straight up alcoholics. I assume they are all dead now, that’s a sure way to do it

I managed a liquor store in the mid-00s. We opened at 10am M-F and the same 6-7 customers would be in the lot at 930am regularly. These same people would see each other every week for years and never say a word to each other.
We had an older widow who was filthy rich buy a fifth of vodka in the morning and big arse wine at night with a handwritten check. Her hand would shake so bad writing the check for morning vodka you could barely read it, but the evening wine check was written with most artistic hand you'll ever see. She was two completely different people at 10am and 6pm. Everyday.

From bars, I always the notice people who after drinking with friends always insist on the "one last shots" on their way out.

People that buy vodka multiple times a week. They are also likely buying from other stores because they are trying to hide their drinking problem from liquor store employees. Puffy faces

Yes, from a former bartender. Same faces every day, mostly came in alone or about an hour before their friends/spouse joined to make it seem like they were drinking a "normal" amount, and rarely if ever deviated from their drink of choice and the number that they had.
The worst physical telltale sign I've seen was one guy had the shakes so bad you'd think he had Parkinsons. He had four quadruple crown and cokes a day, every day, for years. By the time he got his 3rd drink, the shakes went away.

When the covid lockdown rules were first implemented, they said only "essential" businesses were allowed to be open.
The first time I made a trip to the grocery store after that, I noticed that the local liquor store was open so I stopped by.
I asked the owner if they were considered to be "essential" and he told me yes because there are some people that would end up with serious health problems if they had to go more than a day without a drink.

Alcoholism obviously isn't great, but man. IDK. There's something oddly comforting about a familiar bar with familiar faces.
