Covid birthed a lot of alcoholics that wouldn't have an issue otherwise.
Talked to a beer truck driver at the gas station during covid. Right after all the shite hit the fan with lockdowns. Said that the volume was like 4th of July weekend but everyday.
Walking the neighborhood people's recycle bins looked like the week after new years for weeks.
People that live in apartment complexes would come into work complaining that people up partying on weeknights night being loud. Particularly when them $1200 covid checks would come in. People immediately go out and get thrashed on their drug of choice.
Cops said domestic violence calls way up.

Capos bar in Bogalusa was conveniently located next to the paper mill parking lot for decades. They’d open at 5am and catch the night shift. Then they’d make poboys for lunch. They’d catch the evening shift and be closed again at 9. There were usually a few haggards in there for lunch but they weren’t getting a Poboy.

As a high schooler I worked in a liquor store over 50+ years ago. Every Thursday there were a couple people who would come in and cash a paycheck. Of course they bough a couple six packs and a half pint of Jim Beam.
One other thing I learned working there, what is was like to have a .38 stuck in your face during a robbery.

I guarantee that my local HEB knows me as the guy that buys 2-4 IPA (don’t judge me) tall boys a week at the self checkout with other groceries that they have to come log in to let me get. 90% of the time it’s with stuff to grill with.
My alcohol consumption is more than it should be at times but a few tall boys a week is nothing that I’m embarrassed of.
We don’t keep alcohol in the house.

I bartended in Manhattan in the mid 90's for about 6 years. There were neighborhood drunks, famous drunks, and professional drunks and all sorts in between. I noticed that the true alcoholic either got his click after the first drink and would progressively erode over the course of hours OR they would never get the click and never got sloppy over the course of hours. Lots of different types of drinkers out there and they all play the game differently.
