I miss Meijer. People in the Great Lakes area take it for granted.

Pumping gas (New Jersey).
Never forget that.... I had a rental car and pulled up to the pumps to start filling up the tank. Some guy came out of a booth and told me that was against the law in NJ. Said that was his job to pump the gas.

Just being honest: My first trip into Michigan was around age 30, and I was taken aback when I saw local roadway signs saying the area had been adopted by the "Daughters of the Union."
To that point in my life I had only ever encountered "Daughters of the Confederacy," and I had to do a double-take before realizing I was WAY north of the Mason/Dixon.
I don't remember encountering anything particularly unique business-wise. Maybe something related to their cold weather. I did discover a place selling pies that could put Lea's out of business. And, I say that as someone who has spent decades eating at Lea's.

One of my favorites around Boston is:

Maple sugar shacks
Can & bottle redemption centers
While I don't think it's as big as from the 80s & 90s, automotive undercoating/underbody companies are a very northern thing. Ziebart, Krown, etc.

Heating oil distributor.
Some of the shadiest folks around imho. You’d either had to agree to get locked into a contract of X gallons at a fixed rate over the entire winter and take a gamble on not just pricing but also weather or risk trying to find even shadier cash only truckers who most likely had short-delivered every other regular customer that day.

In Chicago we had a ton of places with gyros and hot dogs. In the South you only get gyros at Greek or Mediterranean places and it’s not as good.

I find the chicks up north are more sexually open and not near as uptight when it comes to getting freaky like southern girls.

Doubt you have many of these down south.
