What do you think a truck driver and an engineer talk about for 3 days?
Truck driver: “You son of a bitch. You’re going to cost me my job.”
Engineer: “Better learn to code, bro.”

Probably full service contracts with truck stops?

Does it have a gas card that works?

Wouldn’t it always need a person in the truck? Someone has to at least fill it with diesel at times
In the future when this becomes common and there are still ICE powered trucks the truck stops would have attendants that would fuel the trucks. When they go EV the attendants will handle recharging.
Loaded class 8 trucks vary in their range based on tank size, load and road conditions but most will run between 1300 and 2000 on a fill-up. When there are no more mandated rest periods they could just put larger tanks on and run for as long as it makes sense without fueling.

Very large diesel tanks. Very, very large.

For now, I'm sure it's just the old fashioned way. I would imagine if they can engineer a truck that can drive itself across the country it won't be too hard to automate a pump when they are ready for it.

What happens if a light is malfunctioning..or some other human error that would in return need a person's reaction to relieve the situation?

Show me the video of this truck navigating through a construction zone with lanes shifts marked by 4 sets of old lane striping in the pouring rain.
Show me a video of it navigating down unmarked narrow two lane small town roads making turns at 90 degree intersections.
We have Teslas crashing into guard rails, imagine a 80,000 rig doing it.
Tesla crash video
On great roads with clear markings is is awesome. Dont think I want a big rig driving around the roads in St. Martin parish.

Probably not for 3 straight days.

What would a human do if a light malfunctioned? The truck could be programmed to do the same thing. The truck would know if a light went out and which one (just like most modern cars). Different lights could be programmed for different actions.

If it didn't have drivers how does it pull over when the cops see a burned out tail light?

It won't be long before these AI vehicles can do all of this way better than a human.
It's extremely short-sighted to dismiss this because it's not there just yet.

Show me the video of this truck navigating...
The detection equipment is progressing at a pretty fast clip and the AI is improving exponentially.
Nothing you suggested is new to anyone working on these autonomous projects.
Things like rain/snow are not nearly as much of an issue as with humans since they have radar, lidar, and camera-based systems with 360-degree perception. Their forward-looking potential is out to a mile.

Why would the technology just suddenly stop in its tracks? Don’t you think this is a step in the right direction? Technology for autonomous vehicles will take baby steps at a time, but eventually will overtake human driving in the future
Posted on 12/10/19 at 6:54 pm to buffbraz
It's not even taking baby steps. It's happening very very quickly now. Truckers will most likely start seeing massive job loss in the next decade.

They were still required to follow DOT hours of service rules for the driver.

They don’t make butter in Pennsylvania?
This whole ordeal seems unnecessary.
