I trade every 3 years. IDGAF what long-term reliability or workability is as long as it gets me my 3.

I knew I was getting old when I recently rented a car and it took me about 2 days to figure out how to change the music volume.
Why the frick do they make simple shite so not obvious nowadays?

I have a 24yo Land Cruiser as my daily driver and I love it.
So much simpler than modern cars and I have no note.

I have a 1997 4Runner and my wife has 2020 infinit suv
To change the headlight on my 4Runner it takes 4 minutes, one flathead screwdriver and a $6 bulb. You pop it off from the outside.
To change the headlight on the Infiniti the Xenon bulb is $150 at autozone…and you have to go under the hood, literally remove different parts in the engine bay to get access (washer fluid on one side and the battery on the other) and it takes about 45 minutes per bulb. Just to change a fricking lightbulb. It’s ridiculous
The only benefit I truly see in new cars are safety features and air bags….which is important. But having so much tech, over engineering, and everything expensive to diagnose and repair drives me crazy. They don’t even put spare tires on cars anymore

i don't drive a ton so i can go higher mileage, and i rarely have to pay for my own fuel.

The mpg is brutal. Talking 12/14
But no note, and insurance is cheaper so you come out ahead. Plus it’s more fun IMO.

thing is, i have no note on a car that gets 30/40 mpg
tough to walk away from that, but i'm sick of driving a little car

Real tough to beat.
This is my first SUV, always had full size sedans, but it is so much better Louisiana potholes and flooded roads (put a 3in lift on it)

I had a '99 S10 that i drove until the body rusted. Bought the truck and had to replace the engine and the transmission. Separate times, but cheaper than buying new. Loved that truck; simplest vehicle. Am/Fm radio, A/C, rubberized mat for easy washing out, and couldn't go faster than 76 [downhill], no power anything.
I hate today's car. Too many electronics. Can't drive for all the 'help' the computer gives me.

I'd be perfectly happy with a '97 Suburban if they weren't all rusty as hell up here.
Square bodies are a bit too agrarian for a daily. The GMT400s were a sea change.
I just bought a 99 GMC Classic, Z71 extended cab for the reasons laid out by OP.
I love the GMT400 platform, the early 2000's trucks were great as well.

Meh. Getting a tesla chauffeur when they come out.

They didn't shove all that technology into car strictly for your benefit, they did it to justify the prices to keep going up.
Most of the junk I don't even want and it's mandatory.

I had an old GMC 1500 my dad passed down to me, I think it was a 1998.
It had low miles and had been sitting up for a few years but I took it and used it, I work from home so anytime we went anywhere nice we usually took the wife's car.
The truck was for me to piddle around in, hunt, fish, home depot blah blah blah Man Stuff
Now I have a 60K brand new F150 sitting in the driveway depreciating as I work from home, terrible investment.

When I retire, I'm buying a 70s era blazer or bronco and rebuilding it and make it my daily driver.

The most annoying part to me about new vehicles is that everything is integrated with the factory head unit. It’s becoming more and more difficult to swap out the factory radio.

That's wild.
That guy was smart to buy them for 35,000.

The trend is going to cars that are just big iphones that move you around. Most of the world likes this. Gen-X and Boomer white guys in America are less than 1% of the world population, our opinions don't matter. This is what the manufacturers know will sell globally.
I'm a boomer (64) and own a 2023 Chevy Silverado. I love the bells and whistles.
I'm also an electrical engineer, and my dad was a master mechanic. I know how to fix stuff myself, both electrical and mechanical.

Wish I still had my '95 2 door Tahoe. It had a cassette player in it... Best truck I ever owned. My 15y/o son is pissed I got rid of it.
