It’s crazy that he was widely known to be as much of a pretentious prick as there was on the Hollywood scene of his day, yet was never smug or demeaning to normal people on air and could relate to literally EVERYONE in that format like few other.
For a similar encounter on his show, look up when Lea Johnson of Lea’s Pies in Lecompte was a guest.
Imagine someone like Colbert or Stewart inviting regular old timers on his show and just shooting the shite with them for a few minutes. Carson regularly did that and it was often quite entertaining and never demeaning or patronizing.
