An older guy I used to work with told me that many senior citizens of that time (especially 70 and older) didn't believe we walked on the moon.

Catch I know four people down voted you but I absolutely believe that there are alien bases on the moon and those three Astronauts saw aliens and alien bases up there on the moon. You can see it on all three of their faces in that first press conference when they returned to earth.

Who took this picture if he was “first”?

That is Buzz Aldrin coming down the ladder.
The photo file I took that picture from said it was Neil Armstrong descending the ladder for the first time.

Went to some friends of my parents to watch it, because they had a color TV.

Did the same thing for the first episode of Lost in Space!

It was the summer after I graduated high school and I watched it live.

1. He didn't say "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." He said ""That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
2. That is a photo of Buzz Aldrin descending the LEM ladder, not Neil Armstrong.

I never knew him, but I've heard family talk about him saying that.

Ironically, my mom's dad was chief engineer of that rocket stage that was repeatedly plowed into the lunar surface I wish I knew how short our time together was gonna be. Would've loved to have some interviews with him explaining how/why they did things.

I'm not sure but perhaps because it costs a lot and there isn't anything to study or discover that is worth the cost. Just a guess.

It cost a shitload of money to send a Saturn V up there and the novelty had worn off by the early 70's. Plus, NASA wanted to shift funds to the space shuttle program.

We haven't been back because there hasn't been a pressing need or desire to go back. The US had already "won" that particular Cold War battle in 1969, and the Cold War ended in 1989. The national excitement around space travel had kind of worn off by the 90's (and I suspect a lot were turned off by watching a shuttle explode on TV in 86).

Still, getting there was one of the greatest accomplishments in American history. Still only two types of countries in the world (generally speaking, of course). Those who use the metric system and those who put a man on the moon
