Heck no. I am not giving up my lake house. It’s going to go back to being my getaway spot instead of primary residence.

is that really a big deal? I mean I remember I keep seeing signs down that way in the Lower 9th when I head out towards my parents.

Some people don’t want to live that close to industry

Just something to be aware of

Industry doesn’t bother me. Currently live next to corn fields so I’m exposed to carcinogens and dust daily. Blue collar workers have good insurance instead of medicaid like the people that I currently see. Medicaid will make a doctor starve to death.

You can get gassed up and meet all the hot, local women at the Old Arabi Bar.

One of my aunts used to work there WAY BACK in the 60's when it was nothing but a little late night dive bar. We'd go to the old Arabi Show for the Friday double feature and then walk down to the river to the bar to meet up with family to head home.

Pirogue's on St. Claude was originally called Perino's and run by Pete Perino. Matter of fact, the Perino's had a grip on that area with Joe Perino having his barber shop where the old St. Bernard Bus Station was and Roger Perino having a men's wear store on the corner of Friscoville and St. Claude.

And old Lucien ran the Arabi Bar that was located next to the service station on the opposite corner from Roger's store.

Does the parish line really keep the culture that we all know I am talking about but would get banned if I actually wrote it away?

Not like it used to… they aren’t scared to live in St. Bernard anymore

I would recommend Meraux or further down the road to new arrivals though…

Live in Old Metairie, Lakeview, or Lake Vista/lakefront and have a short commute. The St. Bernard population isn’t healthy, but they are very down to earth and very appreciative patients.

Pirogues and Ktchen Table get a little hipstery at times.

Back when Pirogue's was known as Perino's it was far from that. Mostly blue collar guys----electricians, factory workers from Kaiser and the refineries heading there in the afternoon to wash down the days dirt.

Ike was the resident bookie and on Friday and Saturday nights you could get mixed up in a cash table poker game in the back room. This was before Texan Hold-Em became the game of choice and they played dealer's choice of 3 games------Stud, Draw and Down the River.

All that ended when video poker became a thing. They didn't want to screw up that cash cow by having an illegal poker game running.

The new port terminal could be a problem but we’re a few years away from it really being an issue. It’s definitely happening at some point though. Someone spent a shitload of money to renovate railroad tracks all down St. Claude into the city that hadn’t been touched in decades.

Aren’t Lakeview and Lake Vista in Orleans Parish where taxes and insurance are ungodly expensive?

Yes to both. Both also have areas that just randomly flood on rainy days. Not “in your house flooding” but “park on the neutral ground” street flooding.

Houses are expensive as shite in these areas, too.

Do you have kids or are you planning to have any? There is one private school in St Bernard, Prompt Succor that goes to 7th grade. After that you’re commuting them to the city. I grew up here and went to public school. My kids are going into highschool and we’re moving to a place where they can go to decent public schools. If I was buying it would be in Old Arabi on the river side. Lower Mearaux is too close to Violet, which is the new lower ninth. Still EXTREMELY low violent crime compared to adjacent parish. As was said earlier, police substation at each of the only 3 roadways into the parish with traffic cameras scanning license plates. You’ll see plenty of cars pulled over at the parish line every day. Some still make it through. Great local food, fishing, and family events. And the city is 15 minutes away when we actually have bridges open that allow us to leave. The port and the grain train are coming. Who knows if that’s going to be a boom or bust for the parish. The green bridge is actually green again and we get a new coffee shop every week. The fiery crab on judge Perez is packed. I love having Ocshner so close. Great hospital. With that said, I’m out. Good luck.
I forgot to add. I lived in Chalmette my entire life and I’m tired of every time I come home from vacation I can smell when I get home as I come over the bridge.

That area looks more like the lower 9 got plopped right on top of it.

The actual lower 9th looks less sketchy now.

I wonder if Peal River would have the land you need. You’ll commute, though.
