Met an interesting kid the other day. He’s a junior in high school who scored nationally in the top 1% on the PSAT last year, then just scored a 1380 on the SAT this year. He’s a star wide receiver for his school, and incredibly well read, keeping a reading list made up of mainly history and cosmology. His disposition is laidback but well liked by his peers, and already getting offers around the country. However, school is boring to him.
I asked him what he wanted to do after he graduated and he immediately said plumbing. I was a bit shocked. He went on to say that his dad’s close friend has a small plumbing business he’s looking to retire, but is willing to hand it over to the kid and start training the him this summer to eventually take over after the he graduates.
TL;DR smart kid gonna be a smart baw

The world needs plumbers too

Plumbing is a sure way to make a good living. But seems like a wasted talent with all that potential.

The guy in that movie wasn’t a 1380 Sat, he was a 1600.
Eta: taking over a plumbing business is vastly different then just want to glue pvc and auger toilets.

So he wants to own his own business? How horrible.

Kid is smart but that's not as remarkable as it seems.

I was never rich but I had some comfortable years in my 40s and 50s which is how much I made now I made mistakes but things like divorce and Harvey can add up and so I'm paying for a lot of that now in my stroke and with how little I have to support myself and I have a lot of regrets in that but I don't regret not chasing more money,,, I knew a lot of people with a lot more money than I had and they were definitely more miserable and conflicted

I've heard lots of stories of rich people who really have no purpose after getting rich. It's not that money makes you miserable, it's the path to that money that often takes its toll.

20% of my son's graduating class scored as well. He was however in an elite school.
The kid has great potential. Kids that are properly educated should all achieve at this level of close.

But there are ways to money that don't have to be soul sucking and are much more +EV than a trade like plumbing with much higher margins. Much more mentally stimulating as well.
