Be careful if someone randomly starts talking to you, they aren’t like down here where folks generally greet one another, those who try to communicate with you up there either want something or are crazy.
I guess that’s why I’ve always thought folks from big cities up north were unfriendly assholes, they’re used to ignoring a bunch of nuts.

If you go to Subway in the middle of the night keep an eye out for black MAGA folks with a noose.

Museum of Science and Industry is outstanding,
This may be more of an interest to you and your wife but we've always enjoyed the Chicago Art Institute. They have a large Monet collection.

Do the Hop on Hop off bus tour downtown. Kids will love the double decker bus and they give a good description while you are riding.
You can to the Chicago River tour boat and or the Lake Michigan tour boat.
The craziest thing I saw when my family went there was the Chicago Tribune Building where they collected rock and bricks from famous landmarks around the world and mounted them in the wall at sidewalk level. Your kids can touch the Kremlin and other worldly places.

If either one thinks maps are neat, use Lake Michigan and an observation post in the old Hancock Bldg to let them figure out that the world is round.

I’m convinced some posters on this board have never left their house. Some of you genuinely believe everyone who goes to Chicago, New Orleans, New York, etc is a victim of crime.
Chicago is one of my favorite cities in the world. Architectural boat tour, wrigley, and museum of science and industry would all be great for kids that age.

Go to Markham. Find a park. Have a picnic.

There are two zoos in Chicago. The Lincoln Park Zoo and The Brookfield Zoo. We always enjoyed Brookfield more but it's in the suburbs and was easier for us to get to. Both are world class zoos.

Get a City Pass here: City Pass
Took my boys (9 and 4) earlier this summer and they loved all of the attractions:
Shedd Aquarium
Field Museum
Museum of science and Industry
Sears Tower (there is a Color Factory here too)
Boat Architecture Tour
We also spent an afternoon at one of the Lake Michigan beaches. Outstanding park system.
Bring them to a Cubs or White Sox game.
FYI: the 6 year old won’t need a CTA transit pass. Can ride for free.
