McDonald's fries. That isn't a shift in taste that is a shift in quality.
They either switched cooking oils or aren't changing it out as often as in the past.

McDonald's fries are still better than BK, Wendy's, Whataburger, etc.

Correct, the shift in taste (and aftertaste) coincided with the move to non-trans fat oils for frying.

Moon pies.

I think part of the reason they used to taste great was because I ate them when I was out fishing or hunting. I was hot, or cold, and usually fatigued when I ate them. Anything would have been good. Baught a box a few years back. Opened, and ate one. It tasted like crap. Gave them to the lady, with kids, next door. Kids are like insects. They just need sugar.

Was that mid 80’s. McDonalds fries were the greatest fries ever. Until the switch.

I worked at McDonalds in 1992. We had these boxes of Lard. You used a big ice scooper tool to add/replace grease to the fryers.
Came in 50# boxes like this. They changed to the veggie oil that year or beginning of 1993.

Chee-tos in the early ‘60s when they were sorta moist from the oil.

Smaller green grapes.

IIRC there have been three big oil changes. One was roughly 1990. Then 2 more at about 10-year intervals. People have different opinions but the biggest one to me was the one about 10-12 years ago when they went to no trans fats. That is when I started to get that horrible aftertaste that I honestly can't describe. Other people will argue it was the first oil change that made the biggest difference.

Used to eat at Wendy's just off LSU campus regularly.
Remember waiting for it to open. I'd never eaten at one before. A buddy said their burgers were like your mom would fix at home, only the patties were square. He was right. Wendy's is still pretty good because they still make things to order instead of stacking the deep. They don't use frozen hamburger patties either. At least at none of the company owned stores .Their sea salt fries suck because they're too salty.

I didn't keep up with all of that.

I'd rather get the great tasting ones, if I'm going to eat crap. I don't like any of their sandwiches enough to eat a meal there, but I would get a medium order of fries for a meal every so often. I really don't like any fast food burgers any more. If Im on the road, and have no other choice other than McDonald's, I get one of their little double cheeseburger meals.

Enjoy it while you are young because as you age your taste buds disappear.
Also your digestive tract will cease to digest spicy foods.
